Where to stay in Ajaccio: best areas
Is spending the night in Ajaccio worth it?
Yes, spending a night in Ajaccio may be worthwhile, depending on your personal interests. Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica, offers an attractive combination of beautiful scenery, interesting history and Mediterranean culture.
If you’re interested in history, Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, and you can visit his birthplace, the Maison Bonaparte, which has now been converted into a museum. The town also boasts charming architecture, with its narrow streets, lively squares and historic buildings.
We also love the walk along the waterfront to the Sanguinaires Islands, with its magnificent views over the bay.
It’s one of the most beautiful places to stay in Corsica.
And then you can plan your stay with our guide to What to do in Ajaccio and the most beautiful beaches around Ajaccio (coming soon).
Map – Best areas to stay in Ajaccio
Here’s a map showing where to sleep in and around Ajaccio. Then you’ll find the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Sleeping downtown
The city center is fairly compact and it’s easy to explore and visit Ajaccio’s main sights.
Benefits:
- The charm of the historic heart of the city, with its narrow streets, picturesque squares and ancient buildings
- Easy access to museums and attractions (such as the Palais Fesch or the Maison Bonaparte)
- Easy access to a wide choice of restaurants
Disadvantages:
- Noise and hustle and bustle: As Ajaccio’s old town is a lively place, noise can be a problem, especially in the evening and at night.
- Limited parking: If you’re traveling by car, it can be difficult to find parking in Ajaccio’s old town.
- As soon as you want to leave the city, there’s traffic.
Our favorite hotel:
We recommend Hotel San Carlu – see photos and availability
Sleeping on the western seafront
To the west of the center of Ajaccio, the D111 road runs along the coast towards the Pointe de Parata.
There are many popular beaches along this coastline, and therefore many accommodation options.
Benefits:
- Easy access to beaches
- Quieter than downtown
- Beautiful views of the sea, Ajaccio Bay and the Sanguinaires Islands
- Most hotels have parking facilities
Disadvantages:
- Away from the city center and its attractions
- Fewer restaurant choices
- You have to drive through Ajaccio every time you want to explore the region.
Our favorite hotel:
We recommend Hotel Les Mouettes, not too far from the center – see photos and availability

Sleeping on the marina and Pietralba sides
The port is to the north of the town center, and we’re going to combine the whole of the bay with the Pietralba area.
Benefits:
- Hotels, often with large parking lots
- View on Ajaccio
- Access to the many nautical activities of the Marina
- Faster to get out of town and explore the region
Disadvantages:
- Further from downtown and its attractions (10min to 20min drive)
- Fewer restaurant options
- Less charm
Our favorite hotel:
We recommend the Best Western Amirauté hotel – see photos and availability
Sleeping in Porticcio
On the other side of the bay is Porticcio, Ajaccio’s “twin” for those looking for a beach vacation.
Benefits:
- Access to a large sandy beach and water sports activities
- Fewer buildings, lower density
- Seaside atmosphere: Porticcio offers a relaxed, seaside atmosphere, ideal for recharging your batteries and unwinding.
- Access to downtown Ajaccio by boat shuttle, a very pleasant crossing!
Disadvantages:
- Less charm, more recent construction
- Further from Ajaccio, its attractions and restaurants
Our favorite hotel:
We recommend the Home Suite hotel – see photos and availability
Other tips to keep in mind
Ajaccio is a popular tourist destination. We therefore advise you to book as early as possible to have a choice of hotels and better prices.
We also advise you to consider the price of parking in your choice. If you’re staying in the citadel or around the port, not all hotels have parking facilities, and the city’s parking lots are all paid for and quite expensive.
