FAQ — Parking in Ajaccio

Is it hard to park in Ajaccio?

No, parking in Ajaccio is still relatively easy compared to other cities along the Corsican coast, as long as you know the right options. The city has implemented a clear system of parking zones (blue zone, orange zone, and long-term zone) which, combined with about ten parking lots, meets most of the visitors’ needs.

We saw this for ourselves during our visit: the main challenge isn’t so much finding a spot as it is choosing the right area based on the length of your stay. During peak season, between June and September, however, the campsites on Cours Napoléon and in the historic center fill up quickly in the morning. We therefore recommend that you plan to arrive early if you’re heading to the port area or the Citadel.

Parking in Ajaccio: Summary

Parking on the street: Yes, but take precautions

Unlike other tourist destinations in Corsica, street parking is certainly possible in Ajaccio, but it is organized into paid zones that you should be sure to identify. The blue zone has 1,248 parking spaces at a rate of €0.50 per hour, for a maximum of 5 hours, Monday through Saturday.

Street Parking in Ajaccio

The orange zone, reserved for short-term parking on Cours Napoléon (113 spaces), costs €1 per hour and is limited to 3 hours. Finally, the long-term parking area offers 680 spaces spread across 6 parking lots at €0.50 per hour, for up to 8 hours Monday through Friday, with free parking all day on Saturdays. We recommend that you carefully check the color of your zone on the parking meter before walking away, as rates and maximum parking times vary significantly from one zone to another.

Free parking

There are more free options in Ajaccio than in most other coastal cities. Two entire parking lots—the Place Miot parking lot (180 spaces) and the Landry parking lot (55 spaces)—are available free of charge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, all paid parking zones are free from noon to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday, as well as on Sundays and holidays. More details are provided later in the article.

Essential tips

  • During peak season, arrive before 9 a.m. if you want to find free parking or a spot as close as possible to the harbor.
  • Be sure to take advantage of the free parking break between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to extend your parking time at no charge
  • If you’re driving a 100% electric vehicle, register your license plate on the city’s website before your stay to take advantage of free parking.
  • Do not leave any objects or luggage visible inside the vehicle. Put your belongings in the locked trunk before you arrive at your destination

Accommodation with parking: our recommendations

If you want to make your stay easier, choose accommodations that offer parking. In Ajaccio, many businesses in the city center have a partnership with one of the nearby paid parking lots, or offer a few parking spaces reserved directly for their customers.

We recommend that you check this before making a reservation, especially if you are staying near the Citadel or Cours Napoléon, where street parking is subject to time limits. Hotels that are a little out of the way often have private parking lots.

Where to park to get closer to specific locations in Ajaccio

Ajaccio is organized around several distinct areas: the Citadel and the old quarter, the shopping district centered on Place de Gaulle, and the waterfront with its harbors. Depending on which site you want to visit first, your choice of parking lot will vary significantly. Here are our recommendations for each sector.
Check out our article on the best things to do in Ajaccio.

Where to Park When Visiting the Citadel of Ajaccio

To explore the ramparts of the Citadel of Ajaccio and stroll along the nearby pier, the Citadel Pier Parking Lot is the most direct option. It offers 90 parking spaces right in the heart of the area, so you don’t have to walk from a distant parking lot. We especially appreciate how close it is to the city walls, which allows us to start the tour right away.

Heart of Ajaccio

Where to park when visiting downtown and Place du Diamant

To reach the downtown shopping streets and Place Charles de Gaulle—known to Ajaccio residents as Place du Diamant—the Diamant Underground Parking Garage is naturally the most central option, with 630 spaces under normal circumstances. However, this parking lot is currently under construction, and its capacity may vary depending on the progress of the work. Alternatively, the blue-zone parking spaces around the city center remain a viable option for short- to medium-term parking.

Make way for Aajccio

Where to Park for the Marina and Boat Tours

If you prefer the marina area and its shops, the Parking de l’Amirauté (Port Charles Ornano) offers 225 parking spaces, making it one of the city’s largest parking lots. We find this arrangement convenient for anyone who wants to combine a walk along the waterfront with lunch on a terrace, without having to go back to get the car in between.
It’s also perfect if you’re taking the boat to the Îles Sanguinaires!

The Best Parking Lots for Visiting Ajaccio

Ajaccio offers visitors about ten parking facilities, located throughout the city center, the port, and the hills above the city. Here are the details for each one.

Le Diamant Underground Parking Garage

Located beneath Place Charles de Gaulle—which the people of Ajaccio call Place du Diamant—this parking garage occupies a strategic location right in the heart of downtown. It is currently undergoing renovations, so its capacity may vary depending on the progress of the work. Under normal circumstances, it has a capacity of 630 and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. The parking lot also offers vacation passes, which are currently suspended while construction is underway; payment must be made on the day of arrival.

  • GPS coordinates: 41.917945, 8.737019
  • 840 seats under normal circumstances (reduced capacity during construction)
  • Open 24/7
  • Underground
  • Paying €15.60 for 12 hours, for example

Miséricorde Parking Lot

Located on the site of the former Ajaccio hospital, on the hills above the city, the Parking de la Miséricorde is the main long-term parking option. A free shuttle runs between the station and Cours Napoléon and the Prefecture every 6 minutes, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:35 p.m., and then until 12:40 a.m. We recommend this option first and foremost for parking lasting several hours, especially since parking is already free between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. the following day, and on Saturdays.

  • GPS coordinates: 41.923540, 8.733418

Admiralty Parking Lot

Commonly known as Port de l’Amirauté, this parking lot is actually the Port Charles Ornano parking lot. It is located in a lively area, close to the marina, shops, and restaurants, making it a convenient option for visitors. With 225 parking spaces, it is one of the largest parking lots in Ajaccio and is convenient for getting to the port, the train station, or the many restaurants in the area.

Where should you avoid parking in Ajaccio?

Parking regulations in Ajaccio are generally more flexible than in other cities in Corsica, but there are a few pitfalls you should be aware of before leaving your vehicle just anywhere.

  • Exceeding the maximum allowed time: In the three paid parking zones (blue, orange, and long-term), each additional half-hour beyond the limit results in a post-parking fee of €17.
  • Orange zone on Cours Napoléon: reserved for short-term parking, 3 hours maximum. Do not leave your vehicle beyond this point, or you will be subject to a penalty.

FAQ — Parking in Ajaccio

Where can you park in Ajaccio without having to walk too far?

To get to the Citadel, the Citadel Pier parking lot drops you off just a few steps from the ramparts. For downtown, the Diamant Underground Parking Garage remains the most central option. We would like to remind you that the city has set aside 66 parking spaces in the downtown area for people with limited mobility; these are free for holders of a Mobility Inclusion Card or a European Parking Card.

Are there secure underground parking garages in Ajaccio?

The Diamant Underground Parking Garage is the only covered, enclosed parking facility in the city center. The city’s other parking lots are mainly outdoor lots. In general, we recommend not leaving anything visible inside the vehicle, regardless of which parking lot you choose.

Parking on the street

Is there a parking lot in Ajaccio that’s open 24 hours a day?

Yes, several parking facilities operate around the clock, 7 days a week: the Miséricorde Parking Lot, the Diamant Underground Parking Garage, and the two free parking lots at Place Miot and Place Landry. Self-service payment kiosks generally accept credit cards, either upon entry or exit, depending on the location.

Can you reserve a parking spot in advance in Ajaccio?

From what we’ve seen, Ajaccio’s municipal parking lots do not offer traditional online reservations. Only the Diamant underground parking garage offers weekly or monthly vacation rates, but payment must be made on the day of arrival—not in advance.
