Ajaccio or Porto-Vecchio: comparison summary

Short answer

Both towns are in the south of Corsica, but they don’t offer the same experience. Ajaccio is the island’s regional capital: a large city facing the sea, with a Napoleonic heritage and a lively urban life all year round. Porto-Vecchio is best known for its world-renowned beaches and summer atmosphere, with its marina, Genoese citadel and cork oak forest.

Access + Location to explore the region

The two towns are located in the south of Corsica, but a good distance apart. Ajaccio occupies the west coast, at the end of its large gulf. Porto-Vecchio lies to the east, on the eastern coast of southern Corsica, close to the island’s most famous beaches. Here is a map to help you find your way:

Map of the most beautiful cities in Corsica
Map of Corsica: Ajaccio and Porto-Vecchio in the southern half

The two cities are relatively far apart, which will influence your choice of base depending on the sites you wish to explore:

  • Ajaccio to Porto-Vecchio = approx. 2h30 drive
  • Ajaccio to Bonifacio = 2h45 driving time
  • Ajaccio to Porto (calanques de Piana) = 1h30 drive
  • Ajaccio to Corte = 1h15 drive
  • Porto-Vecchio to Bonifacio = 30min drive
  • Porto-Vecchio to Palombaggia beach = 20min drive
  • Porto-Vecchio to Santa Giulia beach = 15min drive

Airports

Ajaccio Airport
Ajaccio Airport

Ajaccio has the Napoléon Bonaparte airport, the largest in Corsica. Just a 15-minute drive from the city center, it offers year-round flights from many French and European cities. This is a considerable advantage, especially out of season.

For Porto-Vecchio, the nearest airport is Figari, a 25-minute drive away. It is mainly used for seasonal connections. Outside summer, the offer is more limited.
Compare available flights.

Ferries

Ferry to Corsica

Ajaccio is a major ferry port, with regular services from Marseille, Toulon and Nice. Some crossings are overnight: allow 10 to 11 hours from Marseille.

Porto-Vecchio also benefits from direct ferries from the mainland, notably via Corsica Ferries, Corsica Linea and La Méridionale departing from Nice, Marseille or Toulon. This is an advantage over other towns in the south of the island.

Find all ferry options and timetables on Directferries.com.
To help you choose, see our article on ferries to Corsica.

Our review

Ajaccio wins for year-round access, thanks to its large airport and central ferry port. Porto-Vecchio is well served in summer, but Figari airport remains seasonal and the choice of connections is more limited out of season. If you’re traveling in low season, we advise you to check availability before choosing your base.

City charm / Atmosphere

Explore the streets of Ajaccio

Place d'Ajaccio

Ajaccio is Corsica’s largest city, with a population of around 50,000. It’s surrounded by mountains, which makes for interesting vistas as soon as the streets open up onto the landscape. The old town center revolves around the 16th-century citadel and the old town, a mix of large squares and narrow streets lined with pastel-colored houses.

Streets of Ajaccio

The port is just outside the old town. There are many stores, food markets and restaurants. The atmosphere is that of a real Corsican town, lively and urban, very different from the more compact seaside resorts of the rest of the island.

Explore the streets of Porto-Vecchio

Porto-Vecchio

Porto-Vecchio is organized around two distinct poles: the seaside marina, bustling with cafés, restaurants and boutiques, and the 16th-century Genoese citadel perched high above. The old town is pleasant to explore, although less spectacular than neighboring Bonifacio. Porto-Vecchio is first and foremost a seaside town, appreciated for its gentle summer lifestyle and rich seaside surroundings.

corniche Porto ecchio

We found the atmosphere lighter and more leisure-oriented than in Ajaccio. It’s a town that really comes into its own in summer, when the terraces and marina are in full swing.

Our review

Both towns have character, but in different ways. Ajaccio offers the atmosphere of a large Mediterranean town, lively all year round. Porto-Vecchio boasts a seaside resort atmosphere, lighter and more festive in season. When it comes to alleys to explore and the feeling of discovery, we give Porto-Vecchio a slight edge. For an authentic year-round town, Ajaccio is more appropriate.

Easy to get around these cities

Getting around Ajaccio

Bus to Ajaccio

Ajaccio’s old town runs along the waterfront and is well worth a visit on foot. However, as soon as you want to explore more of the city, the terrain requires you to climb. Many homes are located on hilltops, where the streets become very steep. Don’t forget to budget for the cab ride back!
Tourist trains and open-top buses allow you to discover the whole city effortlessly – just buy your ticket.

Getting around Porto-Vecchio

Porto-Vecchio from above

Porto-Vecchio is a great place to walk between the marina and the citadel. By car, city traffic can be heavy, and parking is not free in high season. For the surrounding beaches, a car is essential. However, in summer, beach buses run between the center and the beaches of Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, which is very convenient if you don’t have a car.

Our review

Both towns have slopes and traffic difficulties in high season. Ajaccio is bigger and requires a little more organization. Porto-Vecchio is more compact between its center and marina. For the beaches, Porto-Vecchio has a convenient seasonal bus network. In both cases, a car remains the most efficient way to explore the region.

Most beautiful beaches: Ajaccio or Porto-Vecchio?

Beaches of Ajaccio

Saint-François beach in Ajaccio
Saint-François beach in Ajaccio

In Ajaccio itself, the Plage Saint-François is within walking distance of the citadel. It remains modest in size but pleasant. For beautiful stretches of sand, you’ll have to go further afield: Ricanto beach is on the edge of town, and Porticcio beach, on the other side of the gulf, is accessible by boat or car.

Beach of Porticcio
Porticcio beach, near Ajaccio

A little further south, the beaches of the Isolella peninsula, like Mare e Sole, offer very fine sand in an unspoilt natural setting. We recommend them if you have a car and want to avoid the big crowds.
See our list of the best beaches around Ajaccio.

Beaches of Porto-Vecchio

Palombaggia Beach
Palombaggia Beach

Porto-Vecchio is surrounded by some of Corsica’s most beautiful beaches. A 20-minute drive away, Palombaggia and Tamaricciu combine white sand, turquoise water and umbrella pines in an exceptional setting. We consider Palombaggia to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Closer still, Santa Giulia beach (15min) offers a protected bay with shallow waters, perfect for families.

Beach of Santa Giulia
Beach of Santa Giulia

To the north, the beaches of Saint-Cyprien, the bay of Pinarellu (2km of sand) and the beach of Fautea complete a particularly rich seaside offer. To the south, Rondinara Bay, a 30-minute drive away, is known as one of Europe’s most beautiful bays.
See our article on Porto-Vecchio’s most beautiful beaches.

Our review

Porto-Vecchio clearly wins on this criterion. The surrounding area boasts an exceptional density of beaches, many of them among the finest in the Mediterranean. Ajaccio offers some good options, notably Porticcio and Isolella, but it’s hard to compare with Palombaggia or Santa Giulia. If beaches are your priority, Porto-Vecchio is clearly the best choice.

Attractions, museums and monuments

Attractions in Porto-Vecchio

Saint-Jean-Baptiste church

The main attractions in Porto-Vecchio are..:

  • The 16th-century Genoese citadel and its lively alleyways
  • Saint-Jean-Baptiste church
  • The marina and its seafront terraces
  • The salt marshes on the outskirts of town
  • The adventure park of Porto-Vecchio with tree climbing
  • The Corsica Park, an amusement park

See our article on what to do in Porto-Vecchio.

Our review

Ajaccio has a more extensive cultural offering. Its two museums dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, its architectural heritage and its lively squares make it the richest destination in terms of history. Porto-Vecchio boasts a pleasant citadel and a number of leisure activities, but its cultural offerings are more limited. For lovers of museums and history, we give Ajaccio the clear advantage.

Both towns offer great excursions, but in different directions. Ajaccio offers access to a remarkable diversity of landscapes: sea, mountains, creeks, waterfalls and hilltop villages. Porto-Vecchio is ideally placed to reach Bonifacio and the Lavezzi islands, two must-sees in southern Corsica. We give Ajaccio a slight edge for the variety of landscapes accessible in a day.

Our review

Both cities offer a good choice of accommodation to suit your budget and type of stay. Ajaccio is best suited to off-season stays and to travelers looking for a lively city. Porto-Vecchio shines in summer, with luxury addresses just a stone’s throw from Corsica’s finest beaches. We declare equality: the best choice depends on your travel period and your priorities.

Best gastronomic offer

Charcuterie and Corsican cheese
Charcuterie and Corsican cheese

Corsica is full of specialities to discover: charcuterie (lonzu, coppa, prisuttu), cheeses (brocciu), cookies (canistrelli). Both towns offer access to these local products, both in restaurants and at local markets.

Restaurants in Ajaccio

Ajaccio market
Ajaccio market

Ajaccio offers a wide choice of restaurants, from local bistros to gourmet eateries. In summer, the town comes alive with markets and open-air terraces. If you like fresh produce, don’t miss the market on Place Foch, open every morning from 7am to 2pm (except Mondays from November to March). We found the atmosphere of this market to be both friendly and authentic.
See our favorite restaurants in Ajaccio.

Restaurants in Porto-Vecchio

Porto-Vecchio’s gastronomic scene is supported by a number of top-quality restaurants. The town boasts gourmet restaurants that showcase Corsican and Mediterranean produce, as well as more relaxed addresses along the marina. Among our favorite tables:

  • Restaurant Don Cesar (gastronomic): in a 5-star hotel, Corsican specialties inspired by Italian cuisine. Mediterranean flavors on your plate.
  • Restaurant Le Belvédère (gastronomic): a romantic setting at the water’s edge, seasonal cuisine enhanced by local herbs.
  • Restaurant Santa Marina (gourmet): fresh, colorful dishes right on the waterfront.

Our review

Both towns offer good restaurants and access to Corsican specialties. Ajaccio offers a wider choice thanks to its daily market and its network of restaurants, which are part of local life all year round. Porto-Vecchio makes up for this with top-notch seaside restaurants. We declare equality.
