Why visit Saint-Roch Oratory
Is Saint-Roch Oratory worth it? Our opinion:
The Oratoire Saint-Roch is well worth a visit to discover one of Bastia’s finest Baroque settings. We were impressed by the ornamental richness of this small religious building, which contrasts with its modest façade.

Why is Saint Roch Oratory famous?
In addition to its incredible ornamentation, this small, characterful religious building is famous for its connection to Saint Roch, a protective figure invoked against epidemics. Tradition has it that in 1569, when a violent plague struck Bastia, the epidemic miraculously stopped at the city gates thanks to her intercession. As a sign of their gratitude, the locals erected a shrine in her honor, making the oratory an emblematic place in Bastia’s collective memory and popular fervor.

Our favorite
We loved the dreamlike fresco, which stands out from the other ornamentation in the nave!

An example of Baroque art
We were struck by the striking contrast between the sober neoclassical façade and the baroque opulence of the interior. The façade, rebuilt late in the 19th century by Bastia architect Jean-Louis Guasco, features four Tuscan columns supporting an entablature crowned by a large triangular pediment. Note the white marble portal, remodeled in 1860, topped by the pilgrims’ shell.

But it’s the interior that really dazzled us! The walls are upholstered in traditional Genoese red silk damask, creating a warm atmosphere. You’ll discover the remarkable gilded stucco decor dating from 1617, the work of artist Francesco Marengo, which transforms the space into a veritable jewel box.
And of course, your gaze will immediately be drawn to the superb altarpiece on the high altar, by Florentine Giovanni Bilivert,

Finally, we also fell in love with the admirable carved and gilded walnut organ case from 1750, which completes the ensemble!

An astonishing wealth of iconography
The oratory conceals artistic treasures of a rare quality that particularly impressed us. You can admire the 17th-century depiction of Saint Roch, Saint Sebastian, Saint Martin and Saint Catherine of Alexandria at the feet of the Virgin and Child, signed by Florentine painter Giovanni Bilivert in 1626 and restored in 2016. Baroque sculptures complete this iconographic ensemble, testifying to the religious fervor of the period.

We also invite you to look up at the frescoed ceiling which harmoniously crowns this decorative profusion…

A witness to Bastia’s religious fervor
Saint Roch, invoked in the Middle Ages against epidemics, is at the heart of the oratory’s history. In 1569, a terrible plague ravaged Bastia before mysteriously stopping at the city gates; the inhabitants saw the saint’s miraculous intercession and dedicated this sanctuary to him in gratitude.
Since then, every August, the town has perpetuated her devotion with a mass and procession in her honor, making the oratory a living place of faith and remembrance.
