Calvi or Saint-Florent: summary of the comparison
Short answer
The two towns are located on Corsica’s north-west coast, just an hour and a half’s drive apart. They share the same mountainous hinterland, but offer radically different experiences.
Calvi is the emblematic seaside resort of the Balagne region. Its Genoese citadel dominating a long white sandy beach makes it one of the island’s most recognizable landscapes. We like it for this rare combination: historic heritage and seaside within walking distance of the same city center.
Saint-Florent is more confidential. Nestling in the depths of its gulf, between the Cap Corse mountains and the Agriates desert, it has retained its authentic village character. Its lively port, monuments and position as gateway to the wild beaches of the Agriates make it one of the most attractive destinations in the north of the island.

Access + Location to explore the region
Calvi and Saint-Florent are both located on Corsica’s northwest coast, but at different ends. Calvi lies to the west, in the heart of the Balagne region. Saint-Florent lies further east, at the foot of Cap Corse, just 30 minutes from Bastia. Here’s a map to help you find your way:
The road between the two passes through varied and spectacular scenery, but the journey is short for Corsica. Here are a few useful driving times:
- Calvi to Saint-Florent = 1h30 drive
- Calvi to L’Île-Rousse = 30min drive
- Saint-Florent to Bastia = 30min drive
- Saint-Florent to L’Île-Rousse = 1h drive
- Saint-Florent to Ajaccio = 3h drive (via Corte)
Airports
The two cities are not served by the same airport. Calvi-Sainte-Catherine airport mainly offers seasonal connections from Paris Orly, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, Brussels Charleroi and London Stansted. Out of season, the offer is considerably reduced and can complicate the organization of your stay.
To reach Saint-Florent, Bastia airport is the closest: just a 30-minute drive. It offers year-round flights from many French and European cities, making it easy to get to whatever the season.
Ferries
To reach Saint-Florent by sea, the easiest solution is to cross to the port of Bastia, served from Marseille, Toulon and Nice. Some crossings from Marseille are overnight: allow around 10 to 11 hours.

Our review
Saint-Florent is much more accessible all year round, thanks to its proximity to Bastia, both by air and by ferry. Calvi is well served in summer, but off-season access requires more forethought. If you’re traveling in spring or autumn, Saint-Florent is the most practical choice.

Most beautiful beaches: Calvi or Saint-Florent?
Calvi Beaches
Calvi’s beach is one of the town’s greatest assets: a long strip of white sand bordered by pine trees, in a preserved setting with no beachfront buildings. The citadel and mountains form the background. Parasols, mattresses and pedal boats are available for hire in season, and some areas are supervised in summer. A pontoon runs along the entire beach from the center, making for a particularly pleasant walk.
Other beaches around the bay are well worth a visit: the beach of Sainte-Restitude, Arinella-Lumio and Punta di Spanu.

Beaches of Saint-Florent
In town, Saint-Florent’s main beach is La Roya, located south of the town center. Its shallow waters and protected position in the gulf make it ideal for children. Free parking is available nearby. There are other small beaches to the north of the citadel (Ospedale and Olzu), but they are surrounded by hotels and less visually appealing. We do not particularly recommend them.
Saint-Florent’s real treasure lies in the Agriates Desert, a 20-minute boat ride from the port. The beaches of Lotu and Saleccia are among the most beautiful in Corsica: white sand, turquoise water, a wild landscape with no infrastructure. Our review
When it comes to beaches directly accessible from the town center, Calvi easily wins the comparison. But for wild beaches nearby, Saint-Florent is unbeatable thanks to the Agriates. Without a car, Calvi remains the most practical choice. If you’re looking for unspoilt nature away from crowded areas, Saint-Florent opens a door that Calvi can’t offer on the same level.

The charm and ambience of cities
Explore the streets of Calvi
Calvi operates on two distinct registers. High above, the Genoese citadel unfurls its historic streets carved out of the rock. The silence is marked out of season, and the views over the gulf are exceptional. Below, the marina and seafront offer a livelier atmosphere: terraces, hotels and bars create the typical atmosphere of a Mediterranean seaside resort. We found this contrast particularly successful – you go from one world to the other in just a few minutes on foot.
Explore the streets of Saint-Florent
Saint-Florent is organized around its port, the heart of the town. Cafés, restaurants and ice cream parlors are concentrated along the waterfront in a compact, easy-to-navigate setting. From certain points of the port, you can simultaneously see the Cap Corse mountains on one side and the hills of the Agriates desert on the other: a natural setting that few Corsican villages can offer.
Our review
Calvi captivates with its combination of citadel and beach: few Corsican towns combine the two in such a coherent space. Saint-Florent is more charming for its authenticity and the quality of its natural surroundings. For a classic seaside atmosphere, Calvi is the winner. For a stay in a Corsican village that’s alive all year round, Saint-Florent is more suitable.

Monuments in Calvi
The main things to see in Calvi are:
- The Genoese citadel, built between 1483 and the 17th century – its fortifications and alleyways form the core of the town’s historic heritage. Allow at least 1 hour. We do not recommend this tour for people with walking difficulties: the streets are cobbled and there are many staircases – see all our tour tips.
- Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church, inside the citadel
- The presumed home of Christopher Columbus, according to local tradition
- The marina and waterfront
- The Revellata lighthouse, accessible on foot via a hiking trail

Monuments in Saint-Florent
Saint-Florent has two main monuments:
- The citadel (built in 1440), one of the first Genoese settlements in Corsica. Its original architecture – two square towers and a round tower – is truly astonishing. The citadel is not open to visitors on a daily basis, but it does host seasonal events and exhibitions.
- The 12th-century cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of the Nebbio), built in white limestone in Pisan Romanesque style. It’s on the D238 road, less than 1km from the town center. Visits possible from July to September, every day except Sunday

Excursions from Saint-Florent
From Saint-Florent, you can visit:
- The beaches of the Agriates Desert by boat from the port: 20min to Lotu, then hike to Saleccia through a maquis landscape. By 4WD, some beaches can be reached in around 45 minutes from the main road – see our full advice.
- The vineyards of Patrimonio, just a 10-minute drive away. Family-run estates offer tastings of white, red and rosé wines from the Patrimonio appellation, produced on clay-limestone soils.

Our review
Both cities offer a fine program of excursions, but with different logics. Calvi radiates out towards Balagne (hilltop villages, beaches, nature). Saint-Florent opens up to more contrasting environments: the Agriates, Cap Corse, Patrimonio vineyards and Bastia in a single day. We declare equality: the choice depends on the type of landscapes and activities you’re looking for.

Calvi offers a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets: charming hotels close to the citadel, beachfront addresses and campsites under the pine trees. We found some very good addresses in each category.

Hotels in Saint-Florent
Saint-Florent has fewer hotels than Calvi, mainly concentrated around the port and beach accesses. There are seaside hotels, rental residences and a few campsites in the vicinity. The atmosphere remains that of a village rather than a resort, which suits those looking for a quiet stay. We advise you to book in advance in July and August, when accommodation is in high demand.

Calvi has the advantage thanks to a more diversified selection of charming addresses and beachfront hotels. For large hotels or luxury establishments, Calvi is better equipped.
Best gastronomic offer
Restaurants in Calvi
In Calvi, gastronomy is divided between the restaurants on the seafront and those tucked away in the narrow streets of the citadel. Corsican charcuterie (lonzu, coppa), cheeses (brocciu) and local wines feature on most menus. We recommend making reservations, especially in high season, as the best addresses quickly sell out.

Restaurants in Saint-Florent
Saint-Florent focuses on seafood and everyday Corsican cuisine. The port’s restaurants serve fresh fish and local specialties in simple surroundings. Among the addresses we liked:
- Restaurant La Gaffe: langouste du golfe, cochon de lait corse confit au vin de Patrimonio – a fine cuisine based on local produce
- Restaurant L’Auberge du Pêcheur: fish from local fishmongers, served as sushi, sashimi or cooked with vegetables from the garden
- Restaurant Delfino: terrace on the Ospedale beach, facing the sea, simple, tasty cuisine
Our review
Both towns offer good Corsican food. Saint-Florent stands out for its emphasis on seafood and proximity to local producers. Calvi offers a more varied selection of restaurant styles. More choice in Calvi.
Easy to get around
Getting around Calvi
Calvi’s compact center is easily accessible on foot. A pontoon runs along the entire beach from the port. The citadel, on the other hand, requires physical effort: its cobbled lanes, slopes and staircases call for good shoes. To explore the beaches and villages of Balagne, a car is essential. The beach train (U Trinichellu) is a good alternative: it links Calvi to L’Île-Rousse, serving several beaches along the way.
Getting around Saint-Florent
Saint-Florent is one of Corsica’s easiest towns to visit on foot. The terrain around the port is relatively flat, and large parking lots are available close to the marina, citadel and stadium (chargeable from May to October). Boats for the Agriates Desert leave directly from the port, with no need for a vehicle. For excursions to Patrimonio, Cap Corse or Bastia, a car is useful.
Our review
Both towns are within easy walking distance of each other for the center’s activities. Saint-Florent is perhaps slightly more accessible thanks to its flatter terrain and parking facilities. In both cases, a car is recommended for exploring the surrounding area. Calvi makes up for this with the beach train, which means you don’t need a car to get to L’Île-Rousse and some of the bay’s beaches.
Can we visit Calvi and Saint-Florent on the same trip?
The two towns are about 1? hours apart by road on the D81, along the north side of the island. It’s a short trip to Corsica. If you’re taking a road trip in Corsica, we recommend combining the two stages: they form a beautiful loop in the north of the island, each providing an ideal base for exploring a different territory. Allow 2 to 3 nights in each city to get the most out of the beaches and excursions.
