1 to 4 – What to do in Calvi town

1. Explore the citadel – a must in Calvi

staircase in the Citadel of Calvi

Calvi is very recognizable for its citadel located on a peninsula.
Start by admiring it from the beach, then go and get lost in its alleys!

It was built under the Genoese government, between 1483 and the seventeenth century in order to have stronger defenses. There are impressive fortifications all around.

Inside, you will discover a labyrinth of alleys, stairs, fortifications, and beautiful views in all directions.
Among the monuments note:

  • the church of St. John the Baptist
  • the oratory of Saint-Antoine.
  • MUDACC – the art museum of the citadel of Calvi with works of the Contemporary Art Fund

Here is a short video to give you an idea.
And see our article dedicated to the citadel.

Note: we really don’t recommend the citadel to people with walking difficulties. There are many slopes and stairs and the ground is covered with uneven pavement.

2. Admire the views from the citadel

Citadel of Calvi - panorama

In our opinion, the best moments of the exploration of the Citadel of Calvi are the views all around the fortification walls. On the one hand, you have a complete panorama of the beach and the mountains in the background. It is beautiful!

Citadel of Calvi - views 1

You can’t see it on our picture above because of the clouds, but on a clear day, you can see the highest point of Corsica: Monte Cinto at 2706m.
Those you can see below reach 1500 to 2000m of altitude.
We love it when the views combine the sea and the mountains, don’t you?

3. Walk in the old town

Downtown Calvi - view from the citadel
Old center of Calvi in foreground

Calvi is a tourist center since the 1920s.
The old center of Calvi is located at the foot of the Citadel and along the marina. It is also called the lower city.
In these streets and alleys you will find many stores, workshops, cafes and restaurants.
Georges Clemenceau Street is the most vibrant street. In summer, it is only accessible to pedestrians.

In the middle you can visit the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in baroque style with its unmistakable pink façade.
And in the morning, take advantage of the covered market to discover local cheeses and charcuterie.

And, as you walk along, find out:

  • The salt tower erected in 1495 for defensive purposes, but quickly transformed into a salt warehouse
  • The statue of the water carrier of Louis Patriarche
  • The Marchal Fountain of Calvi erected in honor of a professor of hygiene, born in Calvi
  • The bust of Christopher Columbus, under the ramparts of the citadel

4. Relax on a terrace along the marina

Marina de Calvi - terraces

Calvi has a small but very active tourist port.
All around, the atmosphere is relaxed and festive with bars and restaurants.
Take a walk, relax and unwind…

5 to 8 – Most beautiful beaches in Calvi (and in the Bay)

If you travel to Corsica, you will surely want to enjoy the beaches.
Here is our selection of 4 beautiful beaches in the bay of Calvi.
Learn more in our article about the beaches around Calvi.

5. The Beach of Calvi (Beach of the Pine forest)

Beach of Calvi at sunrise

Calvi’s beach is truly unique in Corsica: a long stretch of sand, views of the mountains, views of a citadel, a pine tree border and easy access to the city.
It really offers a lot of advantages and we love the combination of nature and city. Here the city does not take over the beach. No skyscrapers.
On the other hand, we warn you, it is covered with people in summer…

Sandy beach with lifeguard in summer. Some areas are private.

6. The beach of Sainte-Restitude (20 min away)

beach of Sainte-Restitude

Between Calvi and Lumio, the beach of Sainte-Restitude offers a relaxing setting far from the constructions.
The sandy beach is a happy cove with rocks for those who prefer. And it faces the citadel of Calvi, offering beautiful views, with the mountains in the background.

The descent into the water is gentle and the beach is only 150m long. It is an ideal place with children.

Supervised beach in summer

7. Beach of Arinella Lumio (20min away)

Beach of Arinella Lumio

Another beautiful sandy beach in the bay of Calvi.
From here you can also admire the citadel of Calvi with the mountains in the background.
And there are a lot of rocks around with the point of Caldanu, to which you can make a short hike.

Be careful not to confuse it with the Arinella beach in Bastia

Unsupervised sandy and rocky beach.

8. Punta di Spanu (25min away)

Beach of Balagne - Punta di Spanu

For something different, go to the other end of the bay to Punta di Spanu.
The corner has only two small sandy areas. However, there are plenty of giant boulders to play with!
It is one of our favorite places in Corsica.

The exploration is fun with several small coves and many rocks. Some are smooth because of the water, others are cut. There’s even one that’s been cut cleanly in half. You can walk around the point and up to a tower.
We love rock formations and this is the most beautiful place in Balagne for that…

You can alternate swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing and walking (for example to see the Genoese tower).

Unsupervised coves.
Read more about it.

9 to 14 – What to do around Calvi, in the Balagne region

9. Visit the villages of Balagne

Village of Pigna
Village of Pigna

The Balagne region is also known for its charming villages in the hills with their typical Corsican houses and their unobstructed views between sea and mountains.
Near Calvi, discover:

  • Lumio completely in front of the sea (15min from Calvi) and the abandoned village of Occi just above.
  • Pigna and its blue shutters (35min drive from Calvi)
  • Sant’Antonino, one of the oldest villages in Corsica (30min drive from Calvi)
  • Speloncato and its houses surrounded by rock (50min drive from Calvi)
  • Learn more about the villages of the Balagne.

If you don’t have a car, there are organized tours that take you to the most famous villages – see the availability of organized tours.

10. Beach train: U Trinichellu

What to do in Balagne - Train to Ile-Rousse, U Trinichellu 2

If you don’t have a car (and even if you do), consider taking the train to U Trinichellu.
This tourist train runs during the summer from Calvi to Ile-Rousse and back, stopping several times along the way near the beaches.
It stays along the coast the whole time offering splendid views to the travelers!

It takes 50 minutes for a one-way trip, and they often run every hour in the summer.

11. Visit Île-Rousse

What to do in Balagne - Ile-Rousse Corsica

At only 50min by train or 30min by car, you can discover another seaside resort of the Balagne: L’Île-Rousse. This city has a completely different style from Calvi.
It was founded by the most famous leader of the Corsican people Pasquale Paoli in 1758 (although the place has been inhabited since antiquity). He wanted a port that was not controlled by the Genoese.
We recommend spending some time there to enjoy the walk to the lighthouse on the islands of Pietra (or take the tourist train). The color of the rock is fascinating.
See our guide to visit Ile Rousse.

12. Explore the Revellata Peninsula

view on the Revellata peninsula

And south of Calvi, you can visit the peninsula of La Revalatta.
There is a large parking lot at its base where you can admire the whole peninsula.
You can reach it by car, or enjoy a hike along the Sentiers des Douaniers.
Then you can explore the area with its boulders, small streams and turquoise waters.

13. Our Lady of the Serra

On the heights of Calvi, go to the chapel Notre Dame de La Serra.
Built in the 15th century, it is surrounded by magnificent rocks and scrubland.
And, clearly, it’s from here that you get the best view of Calvi Bay. When we were there, we could see the citadel, the marina, the whole bay and the mountains very clearly. Superb!

Bastia
City of Bastia

Bastia is 2 hours drive from Calvi.
Main city of the north of Corsica, it goes back to the Roman time when it was called Cardo.
Its historic center overlooks the old port with a fortified citadel.
It is very pleasant to walk through the old streets and around the marina.
The atmosphere is lively.
Not to be missed:

  • Enter the religious buildings: Oratory of Saint Roch from the 17th century, church of Saint John the Baptist

There is a parking lot at the foot of the citadel of Calvi. It is called Paking Christopher Columbus or parking of the citadel.
