Balagne is a charming region of Corsica, with vast, relaxing landscapes. For a bucolic getaway, we recommend the hilltop village of Lumio! It lives up to its nickname of “village of light” with its incredible views over the Gulf of Calvi, especially at sunset!
Here’s our guide to Lumio’s must-see stops in the Balagne region and useful tips for planning your visit.

This guide is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Is the village of Lumio worth a visit?
The coastal village of Lumio is well worth a visit for its pleasant setting and authentic atmosphere. We recommend a visit to get lost in its maze of narrow streets, to discover its artisans and its charming Baroque church, overlooking the Bay of Calvi.
For us, it’s one of the top 5 most beautiful villages in Balagne!
1. Admire the panoramic view over the Bay of Calvi
The first thing to do on arrival is to take in the incredible panoramic view of the Bay of Calvi! The contrast between sea and scrub, harsh light and sculpted relief, gives the scene an almost unreal beauty. The best part? Come at sunrise or sunset, when the colors are golden and pink.

2. Get lost in the village lanes
The old village of Lumio is a maze of narrow streets lined with blond stone houses, where various creeping plants grow. Here, the silence is disturbed only by the song of the cicadas and the friendly greetings of neighbors. A stroll through Lumio is a taste of the Corsican art of living at its simplest and most authentic.

3. Discover Sainte-Marie church and bell tower
At the heart of the village stands Sainte-Marie church, with its square bell tower visible from the surrounding area. Built in the 18th century, its powder-pink façade features a remarkable 17th-century ivory Christ.

On our visit, we weren’t able to visit the interior, as the timetable seems to be unpredictable, but we spent a lot of time looking for the best angle to take a photo of the bell tower, which looks like an Italian campanile!

OUR TIPS FOR RENTING A CAR IN Corsica
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is powerful enough (the roads are steep) but compact (some passages are narrow).
- Think of thecomplete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.

4. Stop off at the village’s craftsmen
Once you’ve explored the nooks and crannies of the village, we recommend the following gourmet stops:
- The Miellerie Les Chasseurs de Miel (Honey Hunters), offers you the chance to taste a maquis honey with powerful aromas, produced with passion and respect for local bees.
- The Clos Culombu winery, with its many distinctive Corsican grape varieties. In summer, they even perpetuate the tradition of wheat threshing (a tribbiera), with music, exchanges and exhibitions by local artists.
- Finally, for an aromatic interlude, push open the door to Astratella. This traditional distillery transforms wild maquis plants (immortelle, myrtle, rosemary or clementine) into precious essential oils!

Find out more about the different craftsmen:
- Les Chasseurs de Miel: open Wednesdays and weekends, from 09:30 to 13:00.
- Clos Colombu: open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am – more info here

Useful tips for visiting Lumio
How long and when?
Allow 1h to 2h to explore all the nooks and crannies of the village, without rushing to visit the distillery or the wine cellar.
During the summer months, between May and September, Lumio becomes even more beautiful, but this is also the time when most of Corsica’s tourist traffic is concentrated.
If you want to enjoy the village’s lively atmosphere, don’t hesitate to come along on a Wednesday, when a weekly farmers’ market is held from 8am to 12pm!

Tour directions, map and difficulty
The village of Lumio is small and easy to explore. So there’s no particular direction to follow. We recommend good walking shoes for the cobbled streets. Note also that the village is very steep!
Although there are PRM parking spaces, many of the alleyways have stairs that are not accessible to wheelchair users.

Visiting with children
We didn’t spot any specific attractions for children, but they should appreciate the village’s bucolic feel!

Catering
In Lumio, the pleasures of the table are in the spotlight, from local cuisine to gourmet addresses. We were lucky enough to dine at the Michelin-starred Restaurant La Table Di Mà, where each dish creatively sublimates Corsican flavors.
Look out for our article on this subject soon!
If you’d like to take a bit of Corsica home with you, we also recommend Le Moulin Atrium grocery store, with its many specialties (honey, charcuterie, etc.).
