Video: the best things to do in Sartène
You’ll soon have access to a short video on must-do activities in Sartène.
1. Find the best views of Sartène
Why look for the best view in town?
Sartène is nestled in a magnificent green setting. Between the mountains on one side, and the picturesque town on the other, we were completely seduced by the panorama. Throughout the city, you’ll find several vantage points from which to appreciate the enchanting beauty of Corsica.
We walked outside the historic center to enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Strolling along the T40 towards Ajaccio, you’ll come across an interesting viewpoint just a few meters from the San Micheli wine estate. We took the photo below right there. The lush vegetation and rolling landscape charmed us!
You can also climb up to the Monument de la Résistance at montée Route Boni. Once up there, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of Sartène in the foreground, and the mountains on the horizon. Bring good shoes, as the road is steep.
What you will see
Beyond the magnificent surrounding landscape, we loved wandering around the town, whose ramparts seemed to blend into the rock. We observed the stone buildings, with their sturdy facades and tiled roofs. They stood proudly atop the promontory. The narrow, winding streets were punctuated by picturesque squares. Take advantage of this romantic stroll to get out your camera and immortalize this exceptionally rich setting.
How much time to allow
We recommend you allow 2 hours to explore Sartène’s best viewpoints. You’ll find several that offer different perspectives on the city and its surroundings.
More information on architecture in Sartène
Sartène’s architecture reflects the rich and complex history of this Corsican town. A stroll through its cobbled streets reveals a fascinating mix of influences, from medieval to baroque and contemporary. We really enjoyed discovering the city and its hidden treasures.
2. Contemplate the ramparts and the watchtower
Why look for Sartène’s watchtower?
How can you visit Sartène and not make a detour to see its famous watchtower? Built at the end of the 16th century, it forms part of the ramparts that surround the town. We took a look at the slender loopholes running through it, allowing us to shoot at the enemy from a protected position. Designated a historic monument, it has become the symbol of the town. It’s an important vestige of local history, as it’s the only part of the protective bastion erected in the Pitraghju district. In 1583, the watchtower’s strategic location helped raise the alarm when barbarian pirates attacked Sartène. This watchtower from a bygone era was a real eye-catcher!
What you will see
You can see the ramparts surrounding the town, and its famous watchtower. The low-angle view of the fortifications from the T40 (opposite the San Micheli Estate) is impressive.
How much time to allow
To tour the city’s fortifications, we recommend you allow 1 hour. As Sartène is on a slope, you’ll need to alternate regularly between going downhill and uphill. Several staircases lead directly into the historic center, but they can be quite steep (see our photo above).
More information on the échauguette
The watchtower no longer serves the same function as when it was first created. Today, Restaurant Le Jardin de l’Echauguette has transformed the site into a pleasant elevated terrace. Here you can dine on traditional Corsican meals in an original setting.

Place de la Libération occupies a central and symbolic position in the heart of Sartène. It’s surrounded by historic buildings and restaurants, giving it plenty of charm. It’s the liveliest place in town, where Sarten locals gather and call it by its old name, Place Porta. We were able to contemplate the Town Hall and St. Mary’s Church, which dominate the square with their grandeur.
It’s an ideal starting point for exploring the old town, discovering the local architecture, and immersing yourself in the authentic atmosphere of the region. But before you do, take the time to do a complete tour of the square! You can also enjoy a drink on the terrace of a café in a friendly atmosphere.
What you will see
As you walk around Place de la Libération, you’ll notice..:
- the Town Hall, former palace of the Genoese governors,
- Sainte-Marie-de-l’Assomption church,

More information on the square
Place de la Libération takes its name from the liberation of Corsica during the Second World War. This event marked a crucial turning point in the island’s history, and reinforced Corsicans’ sense of national identity and resistance.
4. Travel back in time through the vaulted passageway
Why cross the vaulted passage?
If you start your tour at Place de la Libération, you’ll certainly have noticed the pretty vaulted passageway that crosses the Hôtel de Ville. In just a few steps, we stepped back in time to immerse ourselves in a medieval atmosphere. In our opinion, this is the best way to enter Sartène’s old town!
What you will see
As you make your way through this passage, you’ll be able to observe..:
- the cobbled street,
- rock walls,
- the emblems hanging from the passageway,
- the old town at the end of the road.
How much time to allow
The crossing will only take you a few seconds, but we recommend that you take the time to observe the small hidden details of the passage (as in our photo above).
More information on the vaulted passageway
Originally, this vaulted passageway was the main entrance to the fortified town. Since then, Sartène has expanded considerably, and is now part of the Communauté de Commune du Sartenais Valinco Taravo. Find out more here.

Why explore the old Petraghju district?
The alleyways of Sartène’s old town, built on different levels, are linked by a complex tangle of alleys, arches and arcades. Strolling through the Pietraggio district, we observed numerous staircases linking narrow, mysterious streets. It was like stepping back in time!
The Petraghju district is the authentic historic center of Sartène. We loved this walk through the city and its hidden treasures. Take the time to observe the stones used to build the houses. Have you noticed anything in particular? From one level to the next, we found that they were not identical.
What you will see
As you stroll through the narrow streets of the Pietraggio district, you’ll be able to observe..:
- numerous staircases,
- dwellings made of rock,
- ancient fortifications,
- a maze of streets,
- typical Corsican signs,

How much time to allow

More information on Sartène’s old quarter
During your walk, you’ll have the chance to soak up the typical Corsican atmosphere of Sartène. Its unique configuration charmed us.
Between the numerous flights of steps and the cobbled streets, the city is not adapted to people with reduced mobility. It is not easily accessible, as it is situated on a slope and built on several levels.
6. Visit Sainte-Marie-de-l’Assomption Church
Why visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta?
After a stroll through the historic district, we headed for the Place de la Libération. We found ourselves facing the Church of Sainte-Marie, which impressed us with its sheer size. It occupies a significant place in the history and cultural fabric of Sartène. This church reflects the religious and architectural influence that has shaped the region over the centuries. Once we’d seen the outside of the building, we couldn’t wait to get inside, of course!
What you will see
As we entered the church, we were struck by the contrast between the exterior architecture and the interior decoration. Here you can observe:
- the cross and chain worn by the Catenacciu penitent,
- the different color moods,
- the diversity of hanging chandeliers,
- baroque details,
- the imposing organ.
How much time to allow
We recommend you allow 30 minutes to visit this typically Corsican church, but with a touch of originality!

Frequently asked questions
Is Sartène worth a visit?
Absolutely! We were charmed by this commune. In our opinion, it’s a must-see in Corse-du-Sud. In fact, Prosper Mérimée called it “the most Corsican of Corsican towns”, due to its strong cultural identity and attachment to island traditions. It’s renowned for its medieval ambience, typical architecture and picturesque hilltop setting. We were amazed by the enchanting panorama that surrounds it.
What is the history of Sartène?
Sartène was built by the Genoese on a rocky promontory in 1507. In 1550, the city faced barbarian raids. To counter its attacks, they decided to build ramparts to ensure the safety of the inhabitants.
In the 16th century, the fortifications were not enough to prevent pirates from taking the town. The inhabitants were either killed or enslaved. Local farmers gradually repopulated the area. The following centuries were marked by internal divisions, peasant struggles and family rivalries. During the Second World War, Sartène became a stronghold of the Corsican Resistance, and the first French department to be liberated in 1943.
