Ajaccio, the capital of the Isle of Beauty, is a city with a rich historical heritage that harmoniously blends Mediterranean charm with Napoleonic references. We were seduced by this destination, which combines heavenly beaches, exceptional natural sites and cultural nuggets.
In this article, discover the 8 reasons why Ajaccio is worth a visit!

This guide is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Is Ajaccio worth a visit?
Yes, Ajaccio is definitely worth a visit! The famous French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was born here. You’ll have plenty of time to follow in his footsteps around the city. Ajaccio is also a lively port city. From the port, we had a choice of many excursions, each more magical than the last. Go to Îles Sanguinaires for those who love the great outdoors, and for those who prefer to stay on the quayside, the central market is nearby. Take a look at our selection of the resort’s best attractions for more inspiration!

Reason 1 – For its city center and port
Ajaccio’s city center will charm you with its bourgeois buildings with ochre and pink facades. During our walk, we discovered the Miollis Citadel which dominates the seaside resort, the picturesque Quartier des Étrangers, and the Place Foch, home to thetown hall and a statue of Napoleon. We loved strolling through the typical narrow streets that wind up to Port Tino Rossi, where the boats are rocked by the waves.

Reason 2 – For Îles Sanguinaires
The archipelago of Îles Sanguinaires is made up of 4 small islands, the main one being Mezu Mare. There’s a semaphore here, which you can reach on foot. The flora and fauna are exceptional. The islands are inhabited only by seabirds such as gulls, shearwaters and gulls, among other birds. As far as vegetation is concerned, up to 150 different species can be seen on Mezu Mare alone! From the islands, we contemplated a breathtaking view of the Pointe de la Parata.

Reason 3 – For its rich history linked to Napoleon I
The legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte, a native of Ajaccio born on August 15, 1769, can be seen around every corner in the imperial city. The city pays tribute to him through museums and monuments, including the remarkable Bonaparte House which recounts the emperor’s childhood. As we wandered around the seaside resort, we also came across statues that perpetuate his memory, such as those on Place Foch and Place d’Austerlitz. While the Ajaccio Cathedral welcomes Napoleon’s baptistery, the Fesch Museum dedicates a floor to the emperor and his family.

To enjoy Ajaccio’s finest beaches, head for the Route des Îles Sanguinaires and Capo di Feno. These areas are particularly renowned for their fine sand and turquoise waters. You can take part in a variety of water sports, or simply enjoy a peaceful swim in an unspoilt setting.

Reason 5 – For its sea excursions
The Tino Rossi marina offers a wide range of sea excursions. You can take the maritime shuttle that links Ajaccio to Porticcio, or sail off to more distant horizons! We particularly recommend cruises to the Scandola reserve and calanques de Piana, or excursions to Bonifacio. You’ll discover the richness of Corsica’s landscapes from the sea, and have access to exceptional bathing spots inaccessible by land.

Reason 6 – For Pointe de la Parata
The Parata peninsula, awarded the Grand Site de France label in 2017, amazed us with its natural landscapes shaped by wind and sea. The vegetation is lush, and the view of Îles Sanguinaires is breathtaking. For those who love walking, we climbed up to the Genoese tower of La Parata. You can admire magnificent sunsets from this unique promontory. The site can be reached in a number of ways: by car, by bus, by small train, or even by boat for a different perspective.

Reason 7 – For its cultural richness
Ajaccio boasts a rich cultural heritage. Beyond its history linked to Napoleon, the town is home to many other treasures. The Musée Fesch particularly appealed to us, with its remarkable collection of Italian paintings (Botticelli, Titian, Poussin and Veronese) and Corsican works. Located in the north wing of the Palais Fesch, the municipal library unveils a remarkable collection of old books in its heritage room. The Ajaccio Cathedralhouses an exceptional painting by Eugène Delacroix, as well as a monumental organ built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1846.

Reason 8 – For its charming market
The Ajaccio market won us over with its authenticity and the quality of its local produce. Gourmets will love this gourmet hall! We loved strolling between the colorful stalls, which gave off the scent of Corsican charcuterie and cheeses. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 7am to 1pm, you’ll discover the region’s specialities. It is close to the Tino Rossi marina and Place Foch. Extend your culinary exploration by trying out the the city’s best restaurants!

Some disadvantages of a trip to Ajaccio
Summer tourist numbers
Ajaccio attracts a growing number of visitors, particularly during the summer months. We note that this influx can cause traffic jams, as the city retains a modest size despite its popularity. You’ll have to contend with the presence of numerous ferries that dock regularly, contributing to the sometimes excessive hustle and bustle of the port and city center during the high season.

Outlying beaches
Ajaccio’s most beautiful beaches are located away from the city center, mostly on the Route des Îles Sanguinaires. We recommend that you bring your own means of transport for easy access. You’ll need to rent a car locally, or use public transport, which means you’ll need to organize your schedule to some extent. Capo di Feno beach, pictured below, is about a 20-minute drive from the town center.

How do I get to Ajaccio?
To reach Ajaccio, you can choose between 2 options:
- by plane: the airport is only 15 minutes from the city center. It’s the quickest and most convenient way to reach Corsica’s capital – see available flights here!
- the ferry: opt for a sea crossing which, although longer, offers the advantage of taking your vehicle on board. It’s a particularly good option if you want to explore the island on your own – see the possible routes here!
