Balagne is a charming region of Corsica, with vast, relaxing landscapes. If you’re in the mood for a soothing jaunt, we recommend the village of Algajola, with its colorful houses, 16th-century fort and, above all, its ribbon of golden beach, ideal for relaxing.
Here’s our guide to the must-see stops in the village of Algajola, Corsica, and useful tips for planning your visit.

This guide is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Is the village of Algajola worth a visit?
Yes, the coastal village of Algajola is well worth a visit for its pleasant setting and authentic atmosphere. We recommend you go there to relax on the golden sandy beach and then take a stroll along the ramparts at sunset! Algajola didn’t make our top 5 list of the most beautiful villages in Balagne, but it’s not far off!
1. Admire the fortress
It’s impossible to miss the massive silhouette of the Algajola citadel, perched high above the sea. Built in the 16th century on the ruins of the Lomellini tower as the residence of the Governor of Balagne for Genoa until 1764, this fortress bears witness to the village’s strategic past. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1992, it is not open to the public as it is now privately owned, but it does give the village a certain aura!

2. Walk along the ramparts
After admiring the fortress, why not extend your visit with a stroll along the ramparts? Facing the sea, the path, dotted with benches, offers a breathtaking view of the citadel, the beach and the Corsican mountains in the background. In the golden hour, the low-angled lights illuminate the old stones and create a meditative atmosphere.

We advise you to allow 30 minutes to stroll along at your own pace, and why not take a look at the explanatory signs along the way.

3. Enjoy the beach
This is undoubtedly the village of Algajola’s greatest asset: the 1.5km-long Arenon beach! It’s a great place to relax in summer and to take a stroll in winter. But beware of swimming, as you can sometimes see big waves.

OUR TIPS FOR RENTING A CAR IN Corsica
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is powerful enough (the roads are steep) but compact (some passages are narrow).
- Think of thecomplete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.

4. Stroll through picturesque alleyways
The center of Algajola is a maze of cobbled streets, blonde stone houses and colorful shutters, typical of the Balagne region. It’s easy to get lost wandering through flower-filled little squares, vaulted passageways and sea views.
A warm, peaceful atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the big seaside resorts.

5. Spend the night in the village
Want to extend your getaway? Algajola has no shortage of lovely places to stay:
- Hotel Casa Orfea, nestled in the heart of the old town
- Hôtel Sérénada, for its direct access to the beach
- Hotel de la Plage Santa Vittoria, highly appreciated for its location
- Hotel Stella Mare, friendly and conveniently located
- Hôtel Les Arcades, a safe bet for a peaceful stay

6. Discover Saint-Georges Church
The church of Saint-Georges watches over the village with its slender bell tower and pale walls. Built in the 15th century and classified as a historical monument in 2004, it still resounds with Corsican songs in summer.
We weren’t able to visit the interior when we were there, as the timetable seems to be a bit unpredictable, but if you can, take a look!

7. Do some shopping
Before setting off again, take the time to browse Algajola’s small boutiques. You’ll find lovely handcrafted souvenirs and local products such as olive oil, Corsican jams and honey from the maquis.
A great way to bring a bit of Balagne back in your suitcases…

Useful tips for visiting Algajola
How long and when?
Allow 1 hour to explore all the village’s nooks and crannies without hurrying, and half a day if you plan to sunbathe on the beach.
Algajola is all the more beautiful in the summer months, between May and September, but this is also the time when most of Corsica’s tourist traffic is concentrated. Plan to arrive early if you want a place on the beach, and make a reservation at the beach restaurant.

Tour directions, map and difficulty
The village of Algajola is small and easy to explore. So there’s no particular direction to follow. We recommend good walking shoes for the cobbled streets and the occasional incline.
Not all of the city’s sites are accessible to the PRM public, nor is the seafront easily accessible.

Visiting with children
We didn’t spot any specific attractions for children, but they should enjoy the beautiful beach and the few activities on offer, such as kayaking and diving!

Restaurants
In the very heart of the village, you’ll find a dozen restaurants, and there are plenty of waterfront dining options to choose from!
We didn’t have time to try out a restaurant during our visit, but we did spot several addresses:
- La Forteresse Restaurant for a gourmet snack!
- Restaurant U Furnellu for tasty pizzas.
- Restaurant La Vieille Cave for its authentic tavern atmosphere.
