Size and travel time
Balagne is a region in north-west Corsica, bounded by mountains to the east and the Mediterranean to the north and west. It stretches some 60km from west to east, from Calvi to the edge of the Agriates Desert. We recommend taking a car: inland villages are poorly served by public transport, and the winding roads are time-consuming.
Here are the main journey times from Calvi:
- Calvi → L’Île-Rousse: 30min by coastal road (or 1h by Balagne tramway)
- Calvi → Sant’Antonino: 20min
- Calvi → Pigna: 15min
- Calvi → Corbara: 25min
- Calvi → Speloncato: 45min
- Calvi → Forêt de Tartagine: 1h
- Calvi → Plage de Lozari (Ostriconi side): 50min
Inland roads are narrow and winding. Expect longer travel times than the distance on the map would suggest, especially to reach villages at altitude.

Criteria for deciding how long to spend in Balagne
Budget
Evaluate how much you can afford in total: this directly determines the length of your stay. Balagne is a seasonal destination where prices vary greatly between the high season (July-August) and the rest of the year. In summer, accommodation and car rentals are booked several weeks in advance and at significantly higher rates.
Price ranges vary enormously depending on the type of accommodation: campsites, B&Bs, vacation rentals, charming hotels… So we can’t give you an exact price. We advise you to research rates according to your type of accommodation and travel period.

Your desires, interests and goals
Spending time at the beach? Explore the villages of the hinterland? Hiking in the forest? Your desires directly determine the number of days you need. An in-depth exploration of the hinterland requires more time than a stay focused on the coast.
The Balagne region offers a wide range of experiences:
- Number of beautiful beaches: moderate,
with good options on the northwest coast and in the Désert des Agriates (wild beaches accessible only on foot or by boat) - Number of historic villages: high
with a rare concentration of medieval hilltop villages in a small area

- Number of cultural and craft venues: moderate
including the Strada di l’Artigiani, Calvi Citadel and Romanesque churches - Number of hikes: moderate to high
from coastal trails to high-altitude itineraries in the Tartagine Forest and Monte Grosso area - Number of different landscapes: high
for a compact region (sea, scrubland, olive groves, mountains, forest) - Nightlife and restaurants: concentrated in Calvi and L’Île-Rousse, much more limited in inland villages

Access and transport
Balagne is accessible by several routes, which can influence the length of your stay. Calvi-Sainte-Catherine Airport serves the region directly, with connections from Paris and a number of European cities, mainly in high season (April to October). Ferries from Nice, Marseille, Toulon and Savona (Italy) arrive at Calvi or L’Île-Rousse. We advise you to check the frequencies according to your travel period, as there are more rotations in summer. Outside the summer season, options are reduced and some direct routes are suspended.
If you arrive via Bastia or Ajaccio, allow around 2h and 3h respectively to reach Calvi.

Visa
Corsica is a French department, and therefore a territory of the European Union. If your passport is outside the Schengen area, the ETIAS tourist visa authorizes you to travel within the Schengen area, including France, for a maximum of 90 continuous days.
Personal circumstances
Take into account your own schedule, including work commitments and personal responsibilities. This will help you realistically assess how much time you can devote to the trip.
Weather, seasons and conditions
The season has a direct impact on your Balagne experience. July and August are the busiest months: beaches and villages are crowded, inland roads can be congested, and prices are at their highest. On the other hand, swimming is excellent and almost all restaurants, activities and accommodation are open. June and September offer a good balance: the sea is warm, crowds are lower and prices are more reasonable. We believe that these are the best times to combine cultural discovery and coastline.
In spring (April-May), the vegetation is dense and hiking is pleasant, but some accommodations and restaurants have not yet opened. In winter, much of the tourist offer is closed: Balagne is not a winter destination in the true sense of the word, even if the setting remains accessible. In addition, some of the roads leading to high-altitude villages can be tricky in wet weather.

OUR TIPS FOR RENTING A CAR IN Corsica
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is powerful enough (the roads are steep) but compact (some passages are narrow).
- Think of thecomplete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.

Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough in Balagne?
With 3 days, you can visit Calvi and its citadel, discover one or two hilltop villages like Sant Antonino or Pigna, and enjoy the beaches along the coast. It’s enough for a first glimpse, but you won’t be able to explore the hinterland or reach the Agriates Desert.
Is 5 days enough in Balagne?
With 5 days, we think you can see the most famous places in the Balagne: Calvi, L’Île-Rousse, the main hilltop villages, a day in the Agriates Desert and a hike in the hinterland. The pace remains steady, but it’s achievable.
7 days is too long in Balagne?
No, 7 days is not too long. The region is compact but dense: villages, coastline, hiking, crafts, local gastronomy. With one week, you can alternate between active days and free time by the sea, without having to run. We believe this is the ideal length of time to really get to grips with the Balagne region.
Is it better to stay in Calvi or L’Île-Rousse?
Both cities are good starting points. Calvi has a more extensive tourist offering, an airport and a citadel to visit on site. Île-Rousse is quieter, with a beautiful covered market and quick access to the villages of central Balagne. If you’re staying 5 days or more, you might consider staying in both. For a short stay, Calvi remains the most practical logistical base.
Can you visit Balagne without a car?
Partly. The Tramway de Balagne (U Trinighellu) links Calvi to L’Île-Rousse, with several stops along the seafront, making it easy to get to the beaches along the coast. By contrast, inland villages are poorly served by public transport. Without a car, access to Sant’Antonino, Speloncato or the Tartagine Forest is difficult. We recommend renting a car if you want to explore beyond the coastline.
