2. Stroll through the village between the port and the church

Propriano - Port

Propriano’s center reveals all its charm between the lively port and the village church. We enjoyed wandering through the typically Corsican streets that tell the story of this ancient maritime city. You’ll discover an authentic architecture combining traditional houses and colorful facades facing the bay. Small shady squares invite you to take a break, while local shops sell local produce and island crafts. This peaceful stroll will let you capture the true soul of Propriano, far from the hustle and bustle of the summer beaches.

  • Free stroll along the quays
  • Numerous restaurants and cafés
  • Departure point for sea excursions
  • Tempted by a boat trip with underwater vision departing from the Port of Propriano?

3. Sailing in the Gulf of Valinco

Propriano - Gulf of Valinco

The Gulf of Valinco offers exceptional seascapes! You can explore the wild coves, secluded beaches and spectacular rock formations of this unspoilt coastline. Excursions offer access to sites inaccessible by road, and a unique perspective on the Corsican coastline. The gulf’s crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling to observe the richness of the seabed.

4. Visit the hilltop village of Olmeto

Propriano - Olmeto village

The village of Olmeto majestically dominates the Gulf of Valinco from its promontory. We were seduced by this authentic little town, which has retained all its traditional Corsican character. Stroll along its cobbled streets, admire the typical architecture of its stone houses and enjoy exceptional panoramic views over the valley and a stretch of sea. The village offers a pleasant interlude, allowing you to discover the true soul of Corsica in a peaceful, unspoilt setting.

  • 15min drive from Propriano
  • Panoramic view of the gulf
  • Traditional Corsican architecture
  • Steep, cobbled streets
  • Some restaurants, bars and cafés

5. Discover Sartène, the most Corsican of Corsican towns

view of Sartène

Sartène fully deserves its nickname of “the most Corsican of Corsican towns”. We were impressed by this medieval city, which has preserved its authenticity and age-old traditions. You’ll discover a remarkable architectural heritage of granite houses, narrow streets and shady squares. The old town reveals Corsica’s tumultuous history through its monuments and legends. This excursion from Propriano will plunge you into the deepest soul of the Isle of Beauty.

  • 20min drive from Propriano
  • Medieval old town
  • Corsican Prehistory Museum

6. Explore the Filitosa Prehistoric Site

Filitosa site

Discovered in 1946, the site has been inhabited for 8,000 years. It’s one of Corsica’s finest examples of megalithic art. It is best known for its menhirs, making it one of the most impressive statuary art sites in the Mediterranean. It’s a great open-air museum. It sheds light on the ancient communities that lived there (from the 6th millennium BC to the Roman Empire). We really enjoyed the walking tour that loops around the various points of interest. It takes you to several structures and megaliths, and offers breathtaking views over the region. The artifacts found on the site are displayed in the museum.

7. Relax at the Baracci or Caldane baths

Caldane baths

Are you looking for peace and relaxation? Head for the thermal baths of South Corsica, near Propriano. These sites are home to baths whose water is naturally heated to a temperature of 38°C. In addition to their relaxing virtues, these thermal springs are recommended for dermatological problems. In our opinion, these natural baths are an original alternative to traditional beaches for rejuvenation.

8. Canyoning in the Baracci Gorges

canyoning south corsica

Canyoning is a must for thrill-seekers in southern Corsica. We were won over by this experience, which allows us to discover the island’s gorges and waterfalls from a totally different angle. You can try your hand at this discipline in the Baracci Canyon, which is perfectly suited to beginners. The activity combines hiking, climbing, swimming and jumping in natural pools, offering an unforgettable adrenaline cocktail in an unspoilt environment!

How to get to Propriano + parking

Where is Propriano?

  • In southern Corsica, in the Gulf of Valinco
  • Sartène: 20min drive
  • Bonifacio: 1h30 drive
  • Ajaccio: 1h30 drive

How to get there?

To reach Propriano, the car remains the most practical and flexible option. From Ajaccio, it’s about an hour and a half drive on the T40, which passes through the beautiful Corsican countryside of mountains and scrubland. From Bonifacio or Porto-Vecchio, it’s another 1.5-hour drive, with many twists and turns and spectacular panoramas. Renting a car is therefore highly recommended to fully enjoy the region. Public transport is more limited: there is no train station in Propriano, and buses to Ajaccio or Porto-Vecchio are infrequent.

Parking in Propriano

Several parking lots are available in the town center and near the port. In summer, we advise you to arrive early in the morning to find a place easily. Parking lots are located near the main beaches.

Useful tips for visiting Propriano

How long and when?

Allow 1 or 2 days to discover Propriano and its immediate surroundings, or a full week to explore the Gulf of Valinco region in depth.

The best period is from May to October, with a preference for June and September to avoid the summer rush.

Visiting directions and difficulties

Start by skirting the harbor to reach the beaches on either side of the marina. Then climb up to the Church of Our Lady of Mercy and see Propriano’s rooftops. The city is easy to get around on foot, but it doesn’t take long to do the rounds. You’ll see stairs and the ground is generally paved, making access difficult for people with reduced mobility. We strongly advise you to bring your own vehicle to enjoy the surrounding activities during your stay.

Propriano - church square

Visiting with children

Propriano is perfect for family vacations. The sandy beaches will delight the youngest, while the boat excursions will offer discovery and wonder. The Filitosa site will capture their imagination with its mysterious prehistoric statues. Soft water activities are also perfectly suited to children.

Restaurants

Propriano has an interesting culinary offering. Discover Corsican specialties at Restaurant Tempi Fà, which overlooks the harbor. This traditional grocery store has a restaurant corner. You’ll enjoy local wines, charcuterie and cheese, as well as regional dishes. For dessert, we opted for the sweet chestnut cake, a typically Corsican recipe!

Propriano - Restaurant Tempi Fà

Propriano in winter

Winter reveals a more intimate and peaceful Corsica. We love this season for exploring natural sites without the crowds and enjoying the typically Mediterranean mildness. Temperatures remain pleasant, ideal for lovely walks along the coast or inland. On the other hand, many tourist activities close during this period, making a stay in Propriano more a time for contemplation than entertainment.
