Absolutely. The calanques de Piana are worth the detour.  <br\/>It is one of the most beautiful places in Corsica and the whole Gulf of Porto is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/where-go-corsica-holidays-destinations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful destinations to go to<\/a>.<br\/>The rocks have intense shades of pink, orange and red. This phenomenon intensifies at sunset when the light is weak.<br\/>Moreover, as it is a hard rock, it is straight with fractures. The more cracks you can get into.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>On foot<\/strong><br\/>Hiking in the creeks allows you to get closer to the rocks, to observe them more closely and to enjoy the views of the Gulf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By car<\/strong><br\/>To drive the road dug in the creeks is already a very beautiful experience, the views are very beautiful on the rocks and on the gulf. One of them is the rare Dianthus gyspergerae.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3f-Calanques-piana-bateau\/i-D5N87H5\/1\/7aca75f4\/L\/calanques_piana_bateau_corse-29-L.jpg\" alt=\"Boat calanques de Piana photos 3\" title=\"Boat calanques de Piana photos 3\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The very straight and steep shapes of these cliffs are due to the fact that the granite rock is very hard. Thus, erosion does not cause it to break so easily and it remains huge and healthy.<\/p>\n\n<p>The calanques create a mini V-shaped mountain range. The highest point reaches 698m. So you can imagine how impressive these straight cliffs are when you approach their base with the boat!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3f-Calanques-piana-bateau\/i-nCKCj7m\/1\/9b283efa\/L\/calanques_piana_bateau_corse-56-L.jpg\" alt=\"Boat calanques de Piana photos 6\" title=\"Boat calanques de Piana photos 6\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Rare birds enjoy this environment as much as we do, with large saw nests installed at the top of points. This is the last peak in the photo below. It reaches 330m of altitude. It is the highest cliff of Corsica.<br\/>At the top is the Turghju Tower, but because of the clouds we can&#8217;t see it here. Calanques is to cross the only road dug into the rock.<br\/>Anyway, if you come from Ajaccio to Porto Ota, you have no other choice than to take this road (unless you make a detour through the mountains via Vico and Evisa).<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Corsican creeks road<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3c-Calanques-Piana-Route\/i-vHRh99P\/1\/3fce0f30\/L\/calanques_piana_route_corse-33-L.jpg\" alt=\"Route calanques de Piana\" title=\"Route calanques de Piana\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The road to the calanques de Piana is the D81 which cuts through the red cliffs. North of Piana, the winding road of 2 to 3 kilometers is quite impressive.<br\/>In some sections, it is not wide enough to pass larger vehicles. That&#8217;s why there are regular places cut in the rock to shift and cross. But these are not parking spaces! We have seen people leaving their cars unattended there, which blocks the traffic.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips for crossing the creeks by car<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3c-Calanques-Piana-Route\/i-PnWPVk9\/5\/9c9184ad\/L\/calanques_piana_route_corse-46-L.jpg\" alt=\"Route calanques de Piana - parking\" title=\"Route calanques de Piana - parking\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is better to leave very early to avoid traffic and have time to enjoy the trip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The best colors are in the late afternoon\/sunset, but the road is still very busy because everyone has the same idea (especially with the summer crowds)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Towards the end of the road is the panoramic caf\u00e9 of the Roches Bleus. It&#8217;s a great place to stop (if the parking lot is not full &#8230;.) but go consume!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We recommend driving in both directions to see different views. As you drive north, you will see more of the cuts and cliffs. It starts in a lower section near the coves with 3 parking lots.<br\/>The &#8220;Castle&#8221; is not a castle, do not expect much. It is simply a square rock&#8230; But it offers beautiful views!<\/p>\n\n<p>Officially, the tour is rated Easy and lasts 1 hour. Well, everyone who did it at the same time as us agreed that it&#8217;s not a good evaluation.<br\/>Allow 1.5 hours and consider it a moderate hike, especially after the rain. The narrow, rocky trail can get quite slippery!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3c-Calanques-Piana-Route\/i-6dQw4bm\/5\/6c751412\/L\/calanques_piana_route_corse-7-L.jpg\" alt=\"Parking Calanques de Piana\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Our advice:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take this walk early or late in the summer. It is very busy and the parking lots fill up quickly. Moreover, the path is not very wide and it is annoying to have to pass people every 30 seconds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear appropriate hiking shoes and bring water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you don&#8217;t feel like walking the whole way, you can walk the first section under the trees to the very impressive rock I call the Eagle (see below). It&#8217;s easy and only takes 10 minutes each way<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Photos of the hike in the calanches of Piana<\/h3>\n\n<p>The walk begins in the forest of Piana where you can find large rocks. There is even one that looks like a hand.<br\/>I really enjoyed seeing such a different aspect of the area. The place looks almost mystical.<br\/>The forest is mainly composed of maritime pines that can live up to 150 years and reach a height of 20 to 30 meters.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/4a-Chateau-Piana\/i-GDzNqHx\/5\/c418ca81\/L\/randonnee_calanques_Piana_chateau_corse-10-L.jpg\" alt=\"The creeks of PIana on foot - Piana castle hike 1\" title=\"The creeks of PIana on foot - Piana castle hike 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Our favorite rock formation in the creeks is what we call the &#8220;Eagle&#8221; because we immediately thought of this animal when we saw it. Explore the villages around the calanches<\/h2>\n\n<p>Thanks to these extraordinary landscapes, the region has several of the <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/best-villages-corsica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful villages in Corsica<\/a>. Here are the 3 main ones:<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-6\">The village of Piana, Corsica<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3c-Calanques-Piana-Route\/i-KQgnGzn\/1\/9dce314a\/L\/village_piana_corse-4-L.jpg\" alt=\"village of Piana Corsica\" title=\"village of Piana Corsica\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>You can also stop in the village of Piana to explore its charming streets with its old houses. The village has the red rocks of the Calanques in the background and faces the Gulf of Porto and the Scandola reserve.<br\/>I have to admit that it is not the most charming village I have seen in Corsica, but its geographical location makes it really special.<\/p>\n\n<p>Its baroque church as a beautiful square tower and inside you can see frescoes typically Corsican.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3f-Calanques-piana-bateau\/i-p2hRBK8\/1\/97aad49b\/L\/village_piana_corse-1-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"village of Piana Corsica 2\" title=\"village of Piana Corsica 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-6\">The village of Porto Ota<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/5d-Village-Ota\/i-JZs4CHx\/5\/c3c83a1f\/L\/ota_village_corse-7-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Ota is located a little above Porto Ota (starting point of the boat tours).<br\/>You can enjoy spectacular views of the sea and the inland.<br\/>Porto Ota to Evisa = 10 min drive.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-6\">The village of Evisa<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/5b-Evisa\/i-b5xrV9j\/2\/54ec9a48\/L\/evisa_corsica-15-L.jpg\" alt=\"Evisa\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>One of the most beautiful villages of Corsica, not so much for the village itself as for its environment.<br\/>It is surrounded by wooded hills (mainly chestnut trees) and mountains, with the peaks of the calanques de Piana in the background.<br\/>Porto Ota to Evisa = 35 min drive.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-7\">Option 5: Ficajola beach &#8211; where to swim in the calanques de Piana<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Corsica-Lovers\/Piana-porto\/n-xMwbmF\/Plage-ficagjola\/i-CHrDLMW\/0\/9893c93e\/L\/Piana_plage_Ficajola-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ficajola - beach of the calanques de Piana  \" title=\"Ficajola - beach of the calanques de Piana  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Inside the creeks, there is only one beach. It is called Ficajola (also written Ficaghjola).<br\/>It is a very small cove with little sand but quite unique with the high pink cliffs that surround it.<br\/>To get there, you have to take the road to Arone and turn right in a narrow and winding road for 4 kilometers hoping not to cross the path of another car.<br\/>And then you have to walk 10 to 15 minutes to get to the beach.<br\/>Despite the difficult access, it is very popular in summer&#8230;<\/p>\n\n<p>For more beach options, you&#8217;ll have to drive a bit and leave the calanques de Piana.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3b-Plage-dArone\/i-gk33d6c\/5\/44b428ed\/L\/plage_arone_Corse-23-L.jpg\" alt=\"Beach of Arone\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Beach of Arone<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Go north and Calvi to find:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The beach of Portinello<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The beach of Gradelle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The beach of Galeria<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Towards the south and Cargese to find:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The beach of Arone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The beach of Peru<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The beach of Chuini<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-1\">Option 6: Hiking in Capo Rosso<\/h2>\n\n<p>Another very famous hike in the area is the one to Capo Rosso.<\/p>\n\n<p>This is a longer hike of moderate level. It takes 4 hours round trip to complete (even though it says 3 hours &#8211; everyone would have to be a marathoner to stick to that time)!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3a-Capo-Rosso\/i-N44dL3d\/5\/189808a2\/L\/Randonnee_Capo_Rosso_Corse-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking from Capo Rosso parking\" title=\"Hiking from Capo Rosso parking\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Parking &#8211; Capo Rosso hike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>The path allows you to go to the tower of Capo Rosso (built in 1608) that you can see in the photo below (on the highest point).<br\/>You can see the landscape in this same image which shows you that the path is rarely flat. It keeps going up and down.<br\/>And the last part to climb to the tower at 330m is rocky, slippery and a bit difficult.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3a-Capo-Rosso\/i-GRfHm6n\/1\/f76590a2\/L\/Capo_Rosso_Corse-4-L.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking in Capo Rosso 1\" title=\"Hiking in Capo Rosso 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>But the final view is worth it. But it&#8217;s not very long.<\/p>\n\n<p>The promenades are not only famous for the high walls all around, but also for the historical Genoese type bridges.
