Calvi, its citadel and its beach<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/6b-calvi-Citadelle\/i-pFn8jHg\/1\/df7ed8d8\/L\/citadelle_calvi_%20Corse_Corsica-50-L.jpg\" alt=\"Downtown Calvi, City of Balagne\" title=\"Downtown Calvi, City of Balagne\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">City of Calvi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Calvi is a tourist center since the 1920s.<br\/>It is a fairly important city with its airport and marina.<br\/>The city is concentrated around the marina where you can stroll and sit at a terrace.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The beach of Calvi<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/6a-Calvi-plage\/i-NDqc9gK\/1\/445a5b75\/L\/plage_calvi_Corse-27-L.jpg\" alt=\"Beach of Calvi Corsica 1\" style=\"width:702px;height:467px\" title=\"Beach of Calvi Corsica 1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Beach of Calvi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>One of the main attractions of Calvi is that there is a large beach in the center of the city.<br\/>This famous beach is called La Pin\u00e8de. There are impressive fortifications all around.<\/p>\n\n<p>Note: we really don&#8217;t recommend the citadel to people with walking difficulties. It is very different from Calvi and other Corsican cities.<br\/>It was founded by the most famous leader of the Corsican people Pasquale Paoli in 1758 (although the place has been inhabited since antiquity). He wanted a port that was not controlled by the Genoese.<br\/>See <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/ile-rousse-corsica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our guide to visit Ile-Rousse<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Downtown and the beach<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/7a-ile-rousse\/i-6zSHTpJ\/1\/bfe46045\/L\/ile_rousse_Corse-6-L.jpg\" alt=\"beach and center of Ile-Rousse  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>In this port city, the roads are straight and the architecture dates mostly from the late 18th to early 19th century.<br\/>You will find a church, a covered market, and pedestrian streets.<br\/>And L&#8217;\u00cele-Rousse has its own fine sandy beach in town. Right next to the Pascal Paoli square. You can really do everything on foot!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pietra Islands<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/7a-ile-rousse\/i-kjnnn5v\/1\/2dc490cc\/L\/ile_rousse_Corse-46-L.jpg\" alt=\"What to do in Balagne - Ile-Rousse Corsica\" title=\"What to do in Balagne - Ile-Rousse Corsica\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The main thing to do in Ile-Rousse is to enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/lighthouse-pietra-island-ile-rousse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the island walk to the top of the lighthouse.<\/a> It all starts on the seaside promenade, on foot or by tourist train.<br\/>What makes the area famous is the series of rocky islands of red porphyry. It is 20 minutes drive from Calvi.<\/p>\n\n<p>The corner has only two small sandy areas. At the moment we don&#8217;t know anything about it but we will try to find someone who does.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-6\">18. The Balagne mountains: Bonifato forest<\/h3>\n\n<p>If you feel a little hot near the sea, why not go up to the mountains of La Balagne to cool off.<br\/>Above Calvi (20km), you discover the Bonifato forest, surrounded by steep walls. It is one of the lungs of La Balagne.<br\/>You can hike, fish, climb, or discover part of the famous GR20.<br\/>But above all, you can swim in the river with its hidden natural pools.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">19 to 21 &#8211; Excursions from Balagne<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">19. Boat to calanques de Piana and Scandola<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/3c-Calanques-Piana-Route\/i-dTDxJPH\/1\/64eec89e\/L\/calanques_piana_route_corse-5-L.jpg\" alt=\"Excursions Calvi - Piana Scandola\" title=\"Excursions Calvi - Piana Scandola\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Calvi to Porto Ota = 2h drive<\/p>\n\n<p>To the south of La Balagne, the <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/gulf-of-porto-corsica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gulf of Porto<\/a> is home to the fabulous Calanques de Piana and the Scandola nature reserve. This site is a Unesco heritage site.<br\/>The landscapes of pink and red cliffs are exceptional.  <br\/>It is one of the most beautiful corners of Corsica.<\/p>\n\n<p>To explore it, you have 2 options:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2h drive from Calvi then boat from Porto Ota (the road is beautiful!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excursion by boat directly from Calvi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>See a lot of options for boat tours <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viator.com\/searchResults\/all?text=Scandola&amp;destId=&amp;pid=P00074304&amp;mcid=42383&amp;medium=link&amp;medium_version=selector&amp;campaign=CL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">on Viator<\/a> and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/s\/?q=Scandola&amp;searchSource=7&amp;partner_id=R3GYW4V&amp;cmp=CL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Getyourguide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">20. <strong>Agriates Desert<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/10e-Saleccia-Beach\/i-SLbGhqX\/1\/c7c2d8a8\/L\/plage_saleccia_desert_agriates_Corse-48-L.jpg\" alt=\"Excursions Calvi - Desert of Agriates\" title=\"Excursions Calvi - Desert of Agriates\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Calvi to St Florent &#8211; 1h40 by car<\/p>\n\n<p>In the north of La Balagne, the desert of Agraites is a protected area with a beautiful wild rocky terrain and heavenly beaches<a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/visit-desert-agriates-corsica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(see our guide<\/a>).<br\/>The whole area is only accessible by boat or 4WD or by boat or on foot.<\/p>\n\n<p>The most famous beach is <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/saleccia-beach-agriates-desert-corsica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saleccia<\/a> with white sand dunes and turquoise water sparkling under the sun.<\/p>\n\n<p>To explore it, you have 2 options:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1h40 drive to Saint-Florent and boat then walk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> 4WD excursion directly from Calvi &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/corsica-l1534\/calvi-4x4-day-tour-to-agriates-and-saleccia-beach-with-swim-t212388\/?partner_id=R3GYW4V&amp;cmp=CL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">see program and availability<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">21.
