Why is it called Ile Rousse?<\/h3>\n\n<p>L&#8217;\u00cele-Rousse is not located on an island.<br\/>The city takes its name from the small island of Pietra where the rocks turn red at sunset.<br\/>Its original name was Isola Rossa, since Italian was the administrative language at the time. Explore downtown Isola Rossa<\/h2>\n\n<p>\u00cele-Rousse is really very different from the other cities of Corsica.<br\/>It was founded by the most famous leader of the Corsican people <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pascal_Paoli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pasquale Paoli<\/a> in 1758 (although the place has been inhabited since antiquity). He wanted a port that was not controlled by the Genoese.<br\/>Therefore, the atmosphere is not the same. The roads are straight, and most of the architecture dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Enjoy the main square<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/7a-ile-rousse\/i-CRM86cd\/1\/1e4e3700\/L\/ile_rousse_Corse-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ile Rousse - City center\" title=\"Ile Rousse - City center\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The town is organized around a main square where you will find a large parking lot.<br\/>It is the Place Pascal Paoli.<br\/>In the background is the Church of the Immaculate Conception. As you can see, the palm trees in front are very high. Apparently, they date from 1890.<br\/>In the middle of the square is the bust of the founder of the city, Pascal Paoli.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Church of the Immaculate Conception<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Corsica-Lovers\/Ile-Rousse\/n-ZmCqdh\/Eglise-Immacul&#xE9;e-Conception\/i-xZGn7MP\/0\/4dad4a47\/L\/ile_rousse_eglise_immancumee_conception-L.jpg\" alt=\"Church of the Immaculate Conception, L'&#xCE;le-Rousse  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The church of the Immaculate Conception dominates the Place Paoli.<br\/>It is surrounded by palm trees.<br\/>It was inaugurated in 1893, but had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1914.<br\/>Inside, enjoy the stained glass windows and the 17th century paintings.<br\/><a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/visit-church-immaculate-conception-ile-rousse\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"11134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more about it.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Pedestrian streets, covered market, Scalo tower<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/7a-ile-rousse\/i-9p6dWJJ\/1\/20a103e4\/L\/ile_rousse_Corse-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ile Rousse - City center market\" title=\"Ile Rousse - City center market\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>One of the main monuments you will notice is the Covered Market where the market has installed stalls. It looks like a Greek temple. It was built in the middle of the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/7a-ile-rousse\/i-9zxRnMF\/1\/3bd9b60b\/L\/ile_rousse_Corse-9-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ile Rousse - Downtown pedestrian street\" title=\"Ile Rousse - Downtown pedestrian street\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a relaxed beach town: not too small and not too big. Its streets are lined with restaurants and stores. It is very pleasant to walk towards the sea like this.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/7a-ile-rousse\/i-NpkJGkc\/1\/94a9d546\/L\/ile_rousse_Corse-13-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ile Rousse - City center rue Tour de Scalo\" title=\"Ile Rousse - City center rue Tour de Scalo\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>At the seaside walking towards the island, you will notice a first big round tower. It is the Tour de Scalo (or Scalu in Corsican).<br\/>It was built in the mid-16th century and restored in 2012. The Fabiani&#8217;s wanted a tower to protect their warehouse and stores (installed here before the city was built by Paoli).<br\/>Paoli kept it to protect the city. And then the French used it to store gunpowder. And in 1778, thunder struck it and part of the neighborhood was destroyed!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4 &#8211; Walk along the Marinella Promenade<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/7a-ile-rousse\/i-6zSHTpJ\/1\/bfe46045\/L\/ile_rousse_Corse-6-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ile Rousse Beach 2\" title=\"Ile Rousse Beach 2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>For an easy walk, enjoy the Marinella Walk.<br\/>It stretches along the sea, right next to the Place Paoli.<br\/>This coastal path runs along the city and the beaches.<br\/>The views are magnificent in both directions.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Statue of the Mermaid<\/h3>\n\n<p>Walking along the water towards the islands, don&#8217;t miss the statue of the Mermaid of L&#8217;\u00cele-Rousse at Scalu.<br\/>It was made in Bronze by Gabriel Diana. Right next to the Pascal Paoli square. You can really do everything on foot!<\/p>\n\n<p>This beach is convenient with crystal clear water.<br\/>But you also have superb beaches of wild white sand near L&#8217;Ile-Rousse. We&#8217;ll show them to you later in this article.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a nice place to relax with restaurants on the waterfront and views of the mountains on the other side. Be careful when crossing the railroad tracks.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. When we walked along it, it was covered with Posidonia algae but this is not always the case. But it is not as fine as on the Bodri beach side.<br\/>It is a great place to relax between the river and the beach.<br\/>You are really surrounded by nature with the hills and the water.<br\/>Lozari
