How to Get to Calvi<\/h3>\n\n

Calvi is well-connected and accessible in several ways. You can fly directly to Calvi Airport, which is the fastest option from mainland France. The ferry, meanwhile, serves L’\u00cele-Rousse, which is just a 30-minute drive away. <\/p>\n\n

By land, Bastia is 2 hours away, Corte is 1 hour and 20 minutes away, and Saint-Florent is 1 hour and 30 minutes away. The town is located on the T30 main road, in the Balagne region, on the northwest coast of Corsica. <\/p>\n\n

Getting around Calvi<\/h3>\n\n

For our one-day itinerary, the good news is that everything can be done on foot. The citadel, the lower town, and the beach are all close to each other. Be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes, though: the narrow streets of the citadel are paved with uneven stones, and the slopes can be steep in places. If your lodging is located in the upper part of the city, you might want to consider renting a bike. As for the car, it will only be useful if you want to explore the surrounding area on a future visit.<\/p>\n\n

9 a.m.\u201312 p.m.: Explore the citadel of Calvi<\/h2>\n\n

Start your day with Calvi’s must-see attraction: its citadel<\/a>. Even before you go inside, we recommend taking a few moments to admire it from below, at the foot of the fortifications. The peninsula on which it stands makes it appear as if it were suspended between the sea and the mountains\u2014a sight that never fails to amaze.<\/p>\n\n

Built under Genoese rule between the13th<\/sup> and17th<\/sup> centuries, these impressive fortifications long protected the city from invasions. At the entrance porch, look up to read the inscription “Civitas Calvi Semper Fidelis” (“City of Calvi, Always Faithful”), engraved in recognition of the residents’ loyalty to the Republic of Genoa.<\/p>\n\n

Once inside, let yourself be surprised by the maze of narrow streets and staircases. The atmosphere there is austere and authentic: few shops, a few workshops, and18th-<\/sup> and19th-century<\/sup> buildings, some of which are dilapidated. We love this unique atmosphere, which stands in stark contrast to the flower-lined alleys of other Mediterranean citadels. <\/p>\n\n

If you’re visiting with your family, keep in mind that there’s a treasure hunt for children: treasure hunt kits are available under the entrance porch from early June through late September, and they’ll guide you on an 11-step quest to find a 4-digit code throughout the fortress.<\/p>\n\n
