Visit the Citadel of Porto-Vecchio and its church Saint-Jean Baptiste<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/14d-Porto-Vecchio\/i-xxdjQwh\/1\/410479e2\/L\/Porto_Vecchio_Corse-3-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Porto-Vecchio Corsica is one of the largest cities on the island and a medium-sized port on the east coast.<br\/>The region is beautiful but the city of Porto-Vecchio is not the most fascinating of Corsican cities<a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/best-towns-corsica-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(see our favorites<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Porto-Vecchio has an old part with the citadel on the hill and a more modern part especially around the port<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the port:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>go up the hill,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pass in front of the Genoese gate &#8211; the historical entrance to the city<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit the Bastion with its beautiful views of the gulf<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explore the narrow streets of the Citadel  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The citadel is of Genoese style, built in the 16th century. Bay of Rondinara<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" It is a beautiful area with lots of shade. A very nice place to relax when it is really hot.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Admire the needles of Bavella<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/13b-Bavella\/i-NZHDJDC\/2\/a4ee16b8\/XL\/Aiguilles_Bavella_Corse-20-XL.jpg\" alt=\"road of the needles of Bavella\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving time from Porto-Vecchio = 1h to the parking<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other advantage of traveling in Corsica is that you are never far from the mountains.<br\/>South Corsica is no exception. And the roads are actually less difficult than in other regions<a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/driving-corsica-car-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(see our driving guide<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most famous mountain peaks of the island is the Aiguilles de Bavella. They are only 1h to 1h30 drive from Porto-Vecchio.<br\/>These are fascinating rock walls with jagged peaks. The highest reaches 1855m (6086ft).<br\/>The road to get there is splendid. Feel the Corsican spirit in Sartene<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/18a-Sart%C3%A8ne\/i-DdWXNdz\/1\/f1ad070b\/L\/Sartene_Corse-39-L.jpg\" alt=\"Sartene\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving time from Porto-Vecchio = 1h10<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another city to visit in South Corsica is Sartene, one of the most beautiful cities in Corsica. It is halfway between Porto-Vecchio and Ajaccio.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not as impressive as Bonifacio but it is really typical of Corsica (whereas Bonifacio seems more Italian).<br\/>Sartene is currently considered as &#8220;the most Corsican of the Corsican cities&#8221;.<br\/>It has tall buildings packed together. Its atmosphere is unique.<br\/>We recommend spending at least a few hours to explore it.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Bathing in a river in the valley of Solenzara<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/13a-Gorge-Solenzara\/i-NSZvWpc\/1\/8f4cd20b\/L\/Gorges_Solenzara_%20Corse-22-L.jpg\" alt=\"valley of Solenzara\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving time from Porto-Vecchio = 50min to 1h10<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most visited gorges is the valley of Solenzara. It has several sections where it is easy to access the water and enjoy a refreshing swim.<br\/>The water is emerald in color, a contrast to the sparkling white rocks of the riverbed.<br\/>And the river Solenzara is surrounded by dense vegetation and mountains in all directions.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13 \u00e0 15. Other beautiful beaches around Porto-Vecchio<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. Bay of Pinarellu<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/13f-Baie-de-Pinarellu\/i-nbVcVVn\/5\/e459c7dc\/L\/Baie_de_Pinarellu_corse-6-L.jpg\" alt=\"Bay of Pinarellu\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving time from Porto-Vecchio = 25min<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The long bay has 2 km of white sandy beaches with shallow waters in a protected environment.<br\/>You can choose to settle either at the wild end of the south side of the bay, or near the colorful rocks, on fine sand near the village to enjoy its many restaurants.<br\/>From everywhere, you have a view of the bay island and its 500 year old tower.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14. Bay of San Ciprianu<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/13g-Baie-de-San-Ciprianu\/i-CdhG8B9\/6\/50cc4fdc\/L\/Baie_de_San_Ciprianu_corse-8-L.jpg\" alt=\"Bay of San Ciprianu\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving time from Porto-Vecchio = 20min<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not as picturesque as the other bays, but easy to access and there are all the facilities on this long stretch of white sand with shallow waters. It has the shape of a beautiful shell.<br\/>Water sports are offered with equipment rental.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">15. Fautea Beach<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/13e-Plage-Fautea\/i-gHcG4c6\/5\/e79ec9ff\/L\/Plage_Fautea_%20Corse-15-L.jpg\" alt=\"Beach of Fautea\" style=\"width:702px;height:467px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving time from Porto-Vecchio = 25min<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fautea has 3 beautiful white sand beaches, one in the village and 2 that can be reached by short walks.<br\/>The most fascinating is the beach of the Tower in the middle: a beautiful little cove surrounded by lush nature (with juniper trees). Activities in and around Porto-Vecchio<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16. Snorkeling<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the beaches of South Corsica have rocks and posidonia meadows. These are great environments to snorkel, see fish and admire the underwater scenery.<br\/>Palombaggia is a good option for snorkeling.<br\/>The water is really transparent in the area.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">17. Explore archaeological sites<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/14c-Cucuruzzu\/i-Nqd67Dq\/1\/0423e9cc\/L\/Cucuruzzu_Corse-39-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cucuruzzu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evidence indicates that groups of humans settled in Southern Corsica around 8500 BC. They exploited the natural resources of their environment (fishing, gathering, collecting).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around 6000 BC another group of humans arrived in Corsica. This time they were farmers and breeders and they started to organize themselves in villages.<br\/>Later, in the Bronze Age, fortified villages were built around the Alta Rocca. This is for example the case of Cucuruzzu, our favorite prehistoric site in Corsica.<br\/>The 2-hour loop hike is a real treat with a forest that looks magical, giant rocks that were used as shelters and complexes built long ago.<br\/>A fascinating experience.  <br\/>But there are many other places you can explore if you like prehistoric sites. For example, closer to the sea, you can also find remains of ancient villages with menhirs and dolmens.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">17. Diving in the Cerbicale Islands<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many places are famous in Corsica for scuba diving.  <br\/>For example, on the side of Porto-Vecchio, the Cerbicale islands are a superb playground.<br\/>You can take your first dive or go on a water walk.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">18.
