The Oratoire Saint-Roch is well worth a visit to discover one of Bastia’s finest Baroque settings. We were impressed by the ornamental richness of this small religious building, which contrasts with its modest fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n\n

Why is Saint Roch Oratory famous?<\/h3>\n\n

In addition to its incredible ornamentation, this small, characterful religious building is famous for its connection to Saint Roch, a protective figure invoked against epidemics. Tradition has it that in 1569, when a violent plague struck Bastia, the epidemic miraculously stopped at the city gates thanks to her intercession. As a sign of their gratitude, the locals erected a shrine in her honor, making the oratory an emblematic place in Bastia’s collective memory and popular fervor.<\/p>\n\n
