We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-2\">About the Corsican mountains<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Corsican mountain range<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/11b-Piedicroce\/i-9v6StHC\/1\/e0e3cdef\/L\/Piedicroce_Corse-23-L.jpg\" alt=\"The Corsican mountain range\" title=\"Corsican Mountain Range\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Corsica is essentially a giant mountain surrounded by the sea.<br\/>Here are some facts about the Corsican mountains:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a mountain range that cuts the island in 2<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The average altitude is 568m<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mountains are higher in the northern part of the island<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is evidence that there were once glaciers on these mountains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than 20 rivers cross them, on 1380 km. Corsica therefore has much more water than the other Mediterranean islands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can find about 40 lakes nestled in these mountains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mountainous peaks of Corsica<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/13b-Bavella\/i-TLTG3Xm\/2\/121bb7d9\/L\/Aiguilles_Bavella_Corse-26-L.jpg\" alt=\"Mountainous peaks of Corsica\" title=\"Corsica Mountain Peaks\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Corsica has at least 120 peaks over 2000m. There&#8217;s plenty to do!<br\/>Classically, they are separated into 4 blocks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Around Monte Cinto, the highest point of Corsica at 2706m (North of the island)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around Monte Rotondo, the second highest peak at 2622m (Center of the island)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around the Monter Renoso, the third highest peak at 2352m (between Ajaccio and Aleria)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around the Monte Incudine at 2134m in the South of the island<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Admiring them is a <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/best-things-to-do-corsica\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">must in Corsica<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Corsican mountains in video<\/h3>\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a short video to give you a glimpse of the Corsican mountains, and make you dream:  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Corsican Mountains\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K2v9SicSZNk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tab-con-0\">Driving in the mountains of Corsica<\/h2>\n\n<p>Driving has the reputation of being difficult in Corsica.  <br\/>It is true that because of the mountains, there are no straight and easy roads.<br\/>They are always winding and never very wide.<br\/>But that&#8217;s also why the scenery is so amazing at every turn!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/5c-gorges-de-Spelunca\/i-k2r8hD9\/1\/e08aaabf\/L\/gorges_de_spelunca_corse-70-L.jpg\" alt=\"Driving in the mountains of Corsica\" title=\"Driving in the mountain of Corsica\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>But don&#8217;t be afraid to drive. It&#8217;s everywhere!<br\/>It was not easy to select our favorites. But here are our top 5:<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. On the way to Aiguilles de Bavella<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/13b-Bavella\/i-NZHDJDC\/2\/a4ee16b8\/XL\/Aiguilles_Bavella_Corse-20-XL.jpg\" alt=\"On the way to the Aiguilles de Bavella\" title=\"Mountains of Corsica - Bavella Needles\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>It was our favorite view of the Corsican mountains. It focuses on the famous Aiguilles de Bavella in South Corsica (Aiguilles de Bavella in French).<br\/>Most people admire them from the pass of Mount Bavella. But our favorite view was at another pass, in the gorges of Solenzara.<br\/>These steep peaks are fascinating.<br\/>The &#8220;Aiguilles&#8221; have 7 peaks. The highest point reaches 1855m and is Punta Alta.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Cap Corse &#8211; where Corsican mountains meet the sea<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/9c-Cote-ouest-cap-Corse\/i-nhPDxK7\/1\/fd405032\/L\/plage_albo_cap_Corse-6-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cap Corse\" title=\"Mountains of Corsica - Cap Corse\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the west coast of Cap Corse. One of the most beautiful destinations in Corsica<a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/where-go-corsica-holidays-destinations\/\">(see our list<\/a>).<br\/>This is where you really realize the expression &#8220;mountain in the sea&#8221;.<br\/>The peninsula is only 10 to 15 km wide. So there is no room to have flat land.<br\/>Its mountain range, La Serra, extends 40 km from north to south. The highest point is the Cima di e Follice at 1322m.<br\/>This small territory has more than 10 peaks over 1000m!<br\/>A winding road follows the entire coastline and offers magnificent views of the mountains and the Gulf of Saint-Florent.  <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/visit-cap-corse-corsica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">See our Guide to Cap Corse.<\/a><br\/>Pictured here is one of my favorite views along this route.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Spelunca Gorge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/5c-gorges-de-Spelunca\/i-Nmxn5bN\/1\/f2a0ea5c\/XL\/gorges_de_spelunca_corse-29-XL.jpg\" alt=\"Gorge of Spelunca\" title=\"Corsican Mountains - Spelunca Gorge\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>In the Gulf of Porto, on the west coast, the stars are the <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/calanques-de-piana-corsica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calanques de Piana<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/scandola-nature-reserve-corsica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scandola reserve <\/a>(for good reason).<br\/>However, if you have your own car, be sure to visit the interior of the regions. These red rock walls extend around the Spelunca canyon and the road to Evisa offers some magnificent views including this one (which is not at the official viewpoint).<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. From Calvi citadel<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/6b-calvi-Citadelle\/i-MQhm6rS\/1\/1adfc656\/L\/citadelle_calvi_%20Corse_Corsica-24-L.jpg\" alt=\"View on the Corsican mountains from the citadel of Calvi\" title=\"Corsican Mountains - Calvi\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">View on the Corsican mountains from the citadel of Calvi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>We had a great surprise while visiting the citadel of Calvi.<br\/>We went there for the history and architecture. But our favorite part of the tour was the views from the fortification walls.<br\/>Especially when looking north towards the beach.<br\/>As you can see in the picture above, you can see the Monte Cinto range with very high peaks. On a clear day, you can even see the highest peak in Corsica, Monte Cinto.<br\/>For a better view, we recommend visiting in the evening. As you can see from my morning photo, I am almost facing the sun.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. It is home to a large university.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit Corte<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/11e-Corte\/i-tXDnjqB\/1\/efa8af13\/M\/Corte_Corse-40-M.jpg\" alt=\"Visit Corte\" title=\"Corte Corsica Mountain town 3\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Although it is located in the middle of the mountains, Corte is very easy to reach.<br\/>All the main roads built on the island pass through Corte. The train also passes through Corte.<br\/>It is the central point for quick travel from one end to the other.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the city itself, you can enjoy:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Walk through the streets of the old town (but wear good shoes because the ground is uneven).  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you don&#8217;t feel like walking up, there is a tourist train that takes you to the museum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the top is the Citadel with the Museum dedicated to Corsica and its history. Each room is dedicated to a different part of the Corsican culture. It does not overload you with information. I enjoyed the visit of the museum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And don&#8217;t miss the splendid 360\u00b0 view from the Belvedere &#8211; see next section<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Belvedere of Corte<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/11e-Corte\/i-jdJqdcS\/1\/a13f6770\/XL\/Corte_Corse-23-XL.jpg\" alt=\"The Belvedere of Corte\" title=\"Corte Corsica Mountain town 1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>And this is our favorite part of Corte. Even if you do nothing else, you should stop at Corte to access the Belvedere and enjoy the 360\u00b0 view.<br\/>The combination of the mountains, the old town and the Citadel balanced on the summit is fascinating. It ended up being on my list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/best-places-in-corsica-tourism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best places to see in Corsica<\/a>, and also one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/best-towns-corsica-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful cities<\/a>.<br\/>What do you think about The best canyons and gorges to drive in Corsica.<br\/>As we wrote earlier, it&#8217;s beautiful everywhere, at every turn. But we still have some favorites.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Road in the Restonica valley<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/12a-Restonica\/i-mksNxGj\/1\/d6c8a340\/L\/Vallee_restonica_Corse-99-L.jpg\" alt=\"Restonica Valley\" title=\"Best drive in Corsica - Restonica Valley\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The Restonica valley is probably one of the most famous gorges in Corsica.<br\/>It is located near Corte, and is the starting point for the famous Lake Melo hike.<br\/>The 15 km route is beautiful with steep peaks, forests, a river and (depending on the season) patches of snow.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, before you start driving, you should know that :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is one of the most difficult roads in Corsica. The road is narrow with difficult sections where there are no guard rails. If you have any fear of mountain driving, don&#8217;t go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The last section to the last parking lot is fenced. There is plenty of shade with the trees and crystal clear pools of water created by the river.<br\/>The road is wide and in good condition. There are several parking lots along the road.<br\/>It is an easy road and you can continue to the Bavella pass with incredible views of the Aiguilles de Bavella.<br\/>The whole route is fantastic.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route through the Inzecca Canyon<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/12b-Inzecca\/i-pCjdp3q\/1\/c07abdc3\/XL\/Defile_Inzecca_Corse-74-XL.jpg\" alt=\"Best drive in Corsica - Inzecca gorge\" title=\"Best drive in Corsica - Inzecca gorge\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The canyon of Inzecca is a less known road that crosses the mountains, not far from<a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/visit-aleria-corsica-roman-ruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Al\u00e9ria<\/a>.<br\/>It&#8217;s a short drive just south of Aleria. You can&#8217;t stop at many places but just driving between the rock walls is fascinating.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Route from<strong> \u00c9vora<\/strong>to Porto<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/5c-gorges-de-Spelunca\/i-tNDXSq8\/1\/965464be\/L\/gorges_de_spelunca_corse-50-L.jpg\" alt=\"Route from &#xC9;vora to Porto\" title=\"Best road in Corsica - Evora to porto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>And on Corsica&#8217;s west coast, you can drive from <a href=\"https:\/\/corsicalovers.fr\/en\/gulf-of-porto-corsica\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Porto Ota<\/a> to the mountain village of Evisa, surrounded by walls of pink and red rock.<br\/>The roads are not too bad. train which makes the connection in summer&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is famous for its cold cuts. There are several stores where you can buy it in town. The pigs grow in the chestnut groves of the surroundings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Evisa<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/5b-Evisa\/i-7M3hftr\/1\/415e3d07\/L\/evisa_corsica-16-L.jpg\" alt=\"Evisa\" title=\"Corsican Villages in the mountains - Evisa\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Located inland from Porto Ota, the village of Evisa itself is not the most charming (in our opinion).<br\/>But its location is fantastic. It is surrounded by red mountains and offers views of the calanques de Piana in the distance.<br\/>We wish we had a picture without the clouds to show you. But you can already guess the magnificence of the environment.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La Castogniccia &#8211; Vescovato<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Corsica\/11a-Vescovato\/i-D8Jtc33\/1\/e7d83280\/L\/Vescovato_Corse-30-L.jpg\" alt=\"Vescovato\" title=\"Corsican Villages in the mountains - Vescovato\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The Castagniccia is a medium altitude massif located on the eastern side of Corsica.<br\/>Its villages look stark from the outside but have a long history and are fascinating to explore.<br\/>Some of them have unique features like the hidden tunnel in Vescovato.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La Castogniccia &#8211;
