Yes, the Church of Sart\u00e8ne is well worth a visit. Its location at the gateway to the old town makes it a must before exploring the historic district.<\/p>\n\n

Once inside the building, we were amazed by the colorful light effects that gave the place a mystical aura. The church occupies a significant place in the history and cultural fabric of the village. It reflects the religious and architectural influence that has shaped the region over the centuries. In fact, it’s one of the must-do activities in Sart\u00e8ne<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The exterior architecture is typical of Corsican churches. Composed of granite walls, its 3-storey bell tower is openwork. It subtly reveals the church bells. Take time to observe the facade of the religious monument, then let your gaze wander to the esplanade. You’ll notice that its size and elevated position dominate the Place de la Lib\u00e9ration.<\/p>\n\n

As soon as we entered the church, we were struck by the omnipresence of color. The pale blue walls, multi-hued stained glass windows and light projections gave the place a special, unique atmosphere. This touch of originality seduced us!<\/p>\n\n

The cross and chain worn by the Catenacciu penitent<\/h3>\n\n

Religious tradition plays a significant role in Corsica and is an integral part of customs, particularly in Sart\u00e8ne. The Good Friday procession, known as “U Catenacciu”, is of particular importance. Find out more here<\/a>. We were able to observe the penitent’s cross and chain hanging on the church wall. Weighing over 30kg, this cross is carried by the penitent over a distance of 2km.<\/p>\n\n

To the right and left of the church, we discovered small alcoves illuminated by light. These colorful projections gave depth to the religious statues. They enveloped the church in a mystical halo.<\/p>\n\n

Visiting the religious building, we noticed that the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling were different. Position yourself at a low angle to get a better look at the fine details!<\/p>\n\n

We were struck by the Baroque-style altar. It really caught our eye with its rich, golden hues. It was topped with swathes of fabric that added a touch of elegance to the place. The play of light and shadow reinforced the depth of the scene unfolding before our eyes.<\/p>\n\n

Before finishing your visit, position yourself with your back to the choir to contemplate the organ on the other side of the church. Framed by 2 colorful stained glass windows, it dominates the room. We took the time to walk quietly up the central aisle to imagine the sound of the instrument echoing between the church walls.<\/p>\n\n
