Are you on vacation in Corsica at Île-Rousse? Take time to visit the Church of the Immaculate Conception. We discovered the treasures it houses, some of which are said to have come from the famous Fesch collection, uncle of Napoleon Bonaparte!
Here are some useful tips for planning your visit to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Île-Rousse.
This guide is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Is a visit to the Church of the Immaculate Conception worthwhile?
Yes, it’s well worth a visit. Built at the end of the 19th century, it is one of Île-Rousse’s churches. We found it charming, with its ochre facade surrounded by palm trees. Its sober interior hides a number of treasures, including a high altar, colorful stained glass windows and 2 paintings dating from the 17th century and listed as a Monument Historique.
This is one of Île-Rousse’s best activities!
What you can see
An entrance surrounded by palm trees
We loved the exotic palm trees that adorn the entrance. The facade of the church is attractive, with its triangular pediment and simple lines.
Statues of saints
In the church, you can contemplate several statues of saints in varying hues, such as Saint Anthony of Padua or Saint Rita, nicknamed “the saint of the impossible”.
OUR TIPS FOR RENTING A CAR IN Corsica
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Choose a car that is powerful enough (the roads are steep) but compact (some passages are narrow).
- Remember to take outcomprehensive insurance (some roads are winding and narrow).
- There is a lot of demand, book it early.
Colorful stained glass
The church’s stained glass windows, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary and Santa Agata, are particularly colorful. We loved their bright colors!
A historic high altar
The high altar also caught our eye. Adorned with a marble dedication plaque, it was donated to the parish by the Duke of Padua, Napoleon II’s former Minister of the Interior, in memory of his wife, the Duchess Elisa.
17th-century paintings
We admired two listed paintings: The Temptation of Christ and Saint Jerome. They probably come from the collection of Cardinal Joseph Fesch. Napoleon’s uncle built up one of the most important art collections in Europe in the early 19th century, with over 16,000 paintings, some of which are now housed at the Musée Fesch in Ajaccio!
A memorial and candles
A commemorative plaque pays tribute to those who fought in the First and Second World Wars. You can light a candle in their memory.
